View Full Version : POTN G-series Speed Challenge #192 - TEXTURE

Well, the time has come to put up or shut up. So I'd better say something...

This challenge, I realize, was quite difficult in the sense that texture is one of my personal favourite subject, especially with my G9, but interpreting and showing that subject is difficult! Personal taste and opinion come into play too, probably more than with other subjects. Still, all the entries here were nothing short of exceptionally clever interpretations of the task that was given to you. For that, my hat is off to each and every one of you! Thanks for entering!

Judging this has been extremely difficult. Picking only three images out of the selection that you have provided is no easy task, and if I chose them again tomorrow, I would likely end up with three different choices. Even the order of the three winners announced here is arbitrary IMO! Lot's of honorable mentions and runners-up here, but ultimately I had to select only three, so I did.

Now to the point. Enough waffling. :) Here are my comments:

Michael Wells - Aloha

Michael, I've never had such a good look at a pineapple! I like the impressive amount of detail that you've captured here, and the black background is appropriate. It helps focus my attention on the subject. I would prefer to have the whole pineapple in focus, instead of the slightly shallower DOF here. But... all that said... you've certainly managed to show the texture of a pineapple! Aloha!

Maureen Souza - Chain Link Fence

I like the diagonal lines of the wires, and the detail in the actual surface of the wire is quite impressive! Unfortunately, while the chain link fence gets my attention, the background is fairly distracting and draws my eye away from the fence. So while I like the image, there’s a lot happening in it for one clear subject to emerge, IMO. That said, I like the image. As I wrote above, all these interpretations are more than worthy, and yours is certainly a fine one!

Boutty - mother earth

Wow! I love this image! I don’t know what to look at first, there’s so much detail! Lots of texture on the ground and in the sky. The surface of mother earth has a lot of texture on it, that's for sure! A very powerful image. Great job!

rpolitsr - old bark

Plenty of texture in that old bark! :) The framing does not quite work for me, but there is so much in this image to hold the viewer’s interest! Lots of texture, and the image shows it very well.

macroshot - wrapped up

Once again, lots of texture, and the B&W conversion works very well for this image. In this case the shallow DOF draws my attention to the vine which wraps around the bolt, which was your intention. Well done!

Gloubiboulga - Portrait of Miss RottenRose…

Lots of texture in that old thing! :) I would prefer a bit more DOF so the whole flower is in focus, but that is nit-picking (isn’t that what we’re supposed to do when judging photos??? :) ). Nicely done!

PicBug - Stands and Beads of Texture

I love the golden tones and all the shadow play here. Once again, I wish there was more DOF to make this more of an abstract, to emphasize the texture even more. That is my personal taste though, and this image is right up there - plenty of texture on show!

LeuceDeuce - Imperial City Wall

Now THAT is texture! There is so much to look at here, colours, texture, everything. Bravo!

teekay - Fall Leaf

Wow! Another one with texture overload! This one has it all, too. The only suggestion I would make is that a close-up crop would make this even better, a real winner for sure!

marie - bare necessities ....... ' dad's army' 1943

I like this one a lot! So much detail - there’s the wooden handle, the canvas strap, and the rusted surfaces contrasted with the pained metal. This image is a very nice example of texture as a subject, IMO.

Jannie - Uncomfortable

Well, it certainly doesn’t look comfortable to me! :) I love the perspective here, and if this was a “Perspective” challenge, this one would be a winner for sure. I like the detail in the concrete floor, too.

Car - Roman Record

Another great image! I love all the detail in here, and the play of light and shadow over the stone carvings. IMO, and it is a personal thing, but a close-up crop would take this over the top! A fine image on its own, but I wonder if a cropped version was also exposed.

hi-landr - G9 rose

Hey, this is a very original take on texture! I like the softness and colours, yet you can see hints of the detail that is there on the surface of the petals.

WatchFan1 - Cement-Straw-Fabric-Brushed-Polished-Gold-Mother-Of-Pearl-Rubies-Paint-Sapph.Crystal

Is that a mouthful or what? :) Plenty of texture and surface detail here. At first a very nice macro shot of a (very nice) watch, but then you notice the details behind the watch as well. Interesting, very interesting!

prcrstn8 - Rusted bolt

Wow! This one got my attention! I like just about everything about this image - the diagonal lines, the play of light and shadow, and of course, the details that you can see on the surface of the bolt. Top-notch!

AND NOW FOR THE WINNERS:

1st - LeuceDeuce - Imperial City Wall

2nd - prcrstn8 - Rusted bolt

3rd - marie - bare necessities ....... ' dad's army' 1943

Thank you Rudi, I walked around all weekend looking at things trying to find texture - it became my mantra (and kind of funny/manic) - and separate that out from color, light, and pattern. I seem to look at some of the same things you do

Boutty, I love your photo. Is it posted anywhere in a larger size?

Thanks so much Rudi, for a great week! Wow, you had a tough job. Congrats to LueceDeuce, Prcrstna8, and Marie! :-) I enjoy seeing some new and some old-new faces this week.

My favs ar Jannie's table and chair, because it caught my attention long enough after a couple of views to figure out exactly what that was, ChrisD's rose because I love the effect, and WatchFan's watch and all the detail you can see from the macro shot you couldn't see otherwise. Also, love all the nature that came out this week!

Beautiful! :-)

Rudi

Yup. And that was my problem - pretty much any of these images was a winner in its own right. I had to work with the restraints that I imposed on myself by choosing texture as the theme for this challenge. Unfortunately that meant that some superb images did not get to be in the top three, even if it was based on a technicality (and the peculiar workings of my brain... :D).

Michael Wells

Thanks, Rudi, for stepping up and hosting this most interesting challenge, and congrats to the winners! Some really fine entries ( as usual ), and I didn't envy you the judging at all this week! Re: your comments on Aloha! You are spot on...I looked at it again the day after I posted it, and realized I should have gone for more DOF, but by then my "model" had suffered a terrible fate in the kitchen, and was not available for another shoot!:) Thanks again...this was a really interesting theme!

Congratulations LeuceDeuce, prcrstn8 and marie

I guess the winner image was also shot in Viet Nam as those images that LeuceDeuce posted in another thread. Beautiful!

It was interesting; prcrstn8 posted the first picture from the G10 in the challenges! We will compare that camera with the G9 and other Gs or Pros in the next challenges.

marie, I like this new picture of that old Willys Jeep we were talking about on a past challenge.

I’m so glad Car posted the ‘roman record’ complete! Do not worry Rudi it is nothing about your comment, I have not photographic arguments here, just that I loved the latin text and spent some time reading about it.
I got some good time on Sunday with your picture, Car.

It was a wonderful set of entries, congratulations to all the participants and thank you, Rudi for hosting with an interesting theme, good comments an multiple (belated :)) entries.

Congrats to everyone ! As Rudi said, I believe it should be VERY difficult to pick up 3 photos among the others. I really liked this challenge, it drove me mad all week long, looking for interesting textures around me in every places I was

Rudi

Yep, I could just as well have picked another three images, the standard was that good! And I nearly did... it really was a difficult decision. I'll be careful not to win another one of these anytime soon (not that I did in the first place! :D). I don't need that kind of stress again... :)

Thank you Rudi for such a great challenge inviting so many fine entries. Congrats to the winners for their well deserved images. To all - awesome textured images indeed.

Thanks, for hosting and judging this week, stresfull enough at the best of times, exceptionally so this week I think given the calibre of entries. Coming second normally means you get the glory and none of the stress:confused:

Indeed, I was asking your permission to talk about your stone. Too obvious? :o

It started in my elementary school, where we were taught to help the priest in the catholic mass, speaking in latin, of course. I always wondered the meaning of those words and now, after half a century, I still play to understand small texts like yours.

The Romans of that time (about 484 A.D.), frequently engraved the stone without spaces between words, broke up the words without the modern hyphen at the end of a row of text, wrote the U and V as V, and wrote a dash above the letters of abbreviations.

Luckily, the first four words are the name of a well known roman consul. With his name, it was easy to search the web for an explanation of the inscription:

From www.the-colosseum.net (http://www.the-colosseum.net/around/sources.htm) with(out) permission. :o
11. Venantius Basilius' (consul 484 A.D.) inscription commemorates the works that the Praefectus Urbi Decius Marius Venantius Basilius had had done - at his own expense - to repair the arena and the podium, damaged by an "abominandus" earthquake.

Decius Marius Venantius
Basilius, V(ir) C(larissimus) et Inl(ustris) Praef(ectus)
Urb(i), Patricius, Consul
Ordinarius, Arenam et
Podium, quae abomi-
nandi terrae mo-
tus ruina pros-
travit, sum(p)tu pro-
prio restituit.

Decimus Marius Venantius Basilius, Very Famous and Well Known Prefect of the City, Patrician, Regular Consul, restored the Arena and Podium which dreaded movements of the Earth cast down into ruin, at his own expense.

:) :) :) (excuse me for the somewhat out of topic comment.)

Rafael, permission was never required! Thank you so much for the link to the colosseum website and the translation of the stone, so very interesting.
We were at the coloseum for only the briefest of times unfortuately, it was the first stop of a walking trip of Rome, and, as you can imagine, there were lots of stops to take in so time at each one was limited. Our guide, although very knowledgeable, could only give us limited information at each venue, so your website link really fills in alot of the gaps for me.
Thank you:D

great and interesting shots, and from everyone

thank you very much Rudi

it is a stressful thing having to host never mind judge which is really hard. we appreciate very much that you took on the task this week
and hopefully will again ;)

it is difficult
so many thanks again

marie, I like this new picture of that old Willys Jeep we were talking about on a past challenge

I was trying to remember which one I had posted and was too tired to look back through the old challenges Rafael , by not putting the one I think was best (and so had probably used it on a challenge before) I liked the texture on that old material and had a history so was kindof special in my mind

still not completely sure but I think this was the one I had on when we talked about the old jeep (willy)
I was lucky that day I had brought my other camera as well and took all the shots except these..... with the 400D
but took these few with the Pro 1 (macro mode)
at the time I found it very hard to adjust to the different kind of viewing (on the cameras) when changing from one to another right after each other

http://www.pbase.com/image/96916818/original.jpg

when posting this time for this challenge I wasn't sure whether to put on photo below
might scare some though.......looks like dried blood adding horror to texture

Okay, we know you can speak Spanish, English, Latin, and recently Java Script... What other surprise you have installed for us? :p

I was born in a Spanish-speaking country, not a surprise that I at least speak Spanish. I used to repeat liturgical sentences in Latin, and now understand some short texts with the help of dictionaries. I barely speak English, but I read and write it, again, with some help from dictionaries. I struggle though JavaScript scripts and other computer languages one line at a time with the help of the reference manuals so the surprise is… I am good at using dictionaries and/or manuals :) :).

Yeah, thanks for dropping in the deep end there, Randall! ;) Hope family's all sorted out and everyone is well. Good to see you back!

I will leave this with one last image, unfortunately this one wasn't made with the G9. I think I made this before I even had the G9, but I could be wrong. It was made with the 5D and 100mm macro and that made it ineligible for any challenge in this forum, but it's one of my favourite "texture" images (although it could also qualify for "colour" and "flora", etc, etc. :) ).

http://rudiphoto.zenfolio.com/img/v2/p409813499.jpg

Too bad I have what feels like the bird flu... otherwise I'd be out there shooting night scenes with the G9 right now - these challenges are addictive! :D
