View Full Version : WTF Canon 5D II neckstrap go to hell

EOS Man

OMG now I'm put off from buying the Canon 5D Mk II... and it's NOT because of the 9 point AF.

Canon puts "EOS 5D Mark II" on EOS 5D Mark II neckstrap. Who does this remind me off? Noink  who enjoys putting their users in danger of getting mugged and stuff.

Saw this pic (http://dpinterface.com/reviews/canon-eos-5dii/outline/canon-5dii-neckstrap.jpg) from here (http://dpinterface.com/reviews/canon-eos-5dii/outline/index.html).

Nice move Canon, nice move. WTF is wrong with their design team recently? First 1D III AF problems, 1Ds tilting viewfinders and now this?!

9th of October 2008 (Thu), 05:52
Dude... if they can see your neckstrap they can see your camera, most likely. Saying "Canon" is just as bad as saing 5D Mark II. You think that muggers keep up with the latest camera releases? Not likely. Canon means just as much if not more than a number and a letter.

Wow. It's a neckstrap. Relax.

AJ05
9th of October 2008 (Thu), 06:08
Agreed - it's only a neckstrap. My 50D arrived with a neckstrap that had 50D on it. I prefer an Optech strap anyway so never put the Canon one on.

woodsie
9th of October 2008 (Thu), 06:10
Yep, $20 neck strap. Definitely a far, far bigger problem than the 1DMkIII AF problem. I'm definitely going back to disposable cameras if they are going to do that with the neck strap.

I hope the OP was joking...... about what is written on the neckstrap being a concern.

More of a concern is the crap neckstraps that Canon includes with their cameras.

I hope you don't have any L lenses as those white lenses scream expensive equipment even more than a strap. Afterall you can see the white lens from much longer distance than you can see the text on a strap.

Edit: Saw you have 2 L lenses. You better sell those, paint them black or leave them at home when you go out to photograph :p

Do you mean that magical material that will rub your neck raw, but won't stay put on your shoulder? Yeah, that is nice. That's why I have 2 POTN Optechs.
Hopefully, though, if Canon is following in Nikon's footsteps, as the OP suggests, after they have addressed the "All Important Neckstrap", they'll give us better grips and built in wireless flash.:D

Now is that more or less expensive than a Sharpie?

SuzyView

I don't think there is an issue here. I haven't even opened the neckstraps I get in my camera boxes. I just order the POTN one before the new cam gets here. With the weight of the lenses I use, I need a better strap than the Canon ones anyway. :) Just get a better strap.

Personally I hate the canon neckstraps.......I need something a little soft with the stretchy flex of neoprene. When you put the grip on the body and then the 70-200 2.8IS -- and have to carry it around for 8+ hrs -- I need something with some cushion. SAY NO TO CANON NECK STRAPS

It simply amazes me the stuff people find to complain about.

There a few hundred options for neckstraps out there. I don't think I have ever used a stock neckstrap that came with any of my cameras.

TheHoff

I think I have a right to complain. Canon neckstraps are incredibly short; are they only for the small-necked??

I don't think he was complaining about the badging on the camera. The strap advertising, to scale up to a Ferrari, would be lettering 3 feet high trailing behind your car.

I would agree that the strap is ugly, replaceable, and not comfortable anyway, but I don't want to hurt the feelings of the people who secretly like the camera model on the strap.

I personally dont like the Canon straps especially with some weight on my body.

The POTN neckstraps just feel so much more comfy and im sure the red ring with would a big enough giveaway to people to know im carrying some expensive gear.

I guess its always going to be a highly subjective area.

I heard from somewhere that the shape of the letters "5D Mark II" on the strap using secretly developed unobtainium (The real stuff, not the Oakley branded rubber) creates an electromagnetic resonance field around the camera which dramatically reduces noise. The striping on the "D" extends this field around the photographer improving the eye's ability to see colour, focus and edgy compositions. The beautiful virgins who will throw themselves at you when wearing this strap was an unintended side effect.

No, seriously. I heard this from a guy in a pub who's brother in law's uncle's cousin's friend has a sister who knows somebody who works in Canon R&D.

Just put a nikon strap on there and nobody will steal it...ha..ha. Or you could make a housing that covers the whole camera and makes it look like something else. Has anyone ever heard of somebody having their camera stolen while they were wearing it? Maybe if you go out at night in a bad neighborhood! Just think, if you hang 2 cameras, a tripod and other gear on you, you won't be able to run fast enough if they come to mug you...ha.ha.....so don't carry more than a point and shoot!

When I get the 5D MkII I think after seeing this thread I will use my new 5D MkII strap to hold a "ringer" camera, like maybe my old 35mm film rebel.
I will keep the 5D on my crappy sweatstained dirty 30D strap that I use now. That way when a robber sees that "5dMkII" logo and I do get mugged, (which certainly will happen), the joke is on them when they take my lousy old 35mm camera!!!;)
(and I will make sure to get HD video of them fleeing the scene with my 5d MkII!...don't worry I'll post it on this thread!)

BTW this irresponsible marketing on the part of Canon has to stop! it's like they want me to get mugged so I'll have to buy a new camera! Nice plan guys, thankfully this thread will save me from going out like that!

LOL, life experience has taught me there are some people who would return their 5DII if when they opened the box it did not have that strap with those big letters showing the world how worldly they have now become, i.e. I have played with golfers who would insist that if they bought a new Canon 5DII that the name on their matching camera bag cover the entire side of the bag so everyone would know they own a CANON.

A couple of my friends place flat black tape over the Canon logo and model name so it just looks like a generic camera. Guess that helps keep you from getting mugged in Brazil when your carrying such a valuable camera worth stealing.

Canon 5D Mark II -$2700 dollars
Replacing a neck strap - $20 dollars
Whining about neck strap which is only 0.0074% of the total camera cost instead of the 9pts AF upgrade.... Priceless.

Now that is funny!!Yes, it's funny, but wrong.

why would you roll a canon neckstrap anyway....there are so many grippier and/or more comfortable options out there

I wonder if we should start a class action suit against Canon for enticing muggers?

I totally agree. The canon neck strap is killing my neck... I replaced it with op/tech super classic and now the 70-200 2.8 IS feels so much lighter... the cushioning thingy does work magic.

Dude... if they can see your neckstrap they can see your camera, most likely. Saying "Canon" is just as bad as saing 5D Mark II. You think that muggers keep up with the latest camera releases? Not likely. Canon means just as much if not more than a number and a letter.

This is true. Most folks here would mug you because you have anything that looks more expensive than a point and shoot :(

That's the last straw, I'm switching....to Nikon neck straps. That should be protection enough.

Will a Nikon neck strap fit on a Canon 5D or 5D MKii?

I didn't read them all but I did scroll through all 7 pages and the OP never posted again in his thread. I think he may have been intimidated by the responses.

I did use the strap that came with my 40D but only until my POTN strap arrived. I don't know what is written on the Canon strap and don't really care enough to look.

I'd watch out. More than once I've almost been "camera jacked" then they see the "olympus" camera strap and they say "excuse me" and go to the next photog in line looking for a Canon.

I suspect the bigger issue with having a "5D2" strap over being mugged is when the middle-aged, semi bald man with a pot belly earned after too many years scoffing pies wanders over during a shoot and says the following:

(Pinch nose whilst saying it)

"Aww gee, I see you got yourself one of them there new 5D's! Dang!() That there's one hell of a nice camera you got there. It's got the high ISO and 21Mangapixels right? You know I take pictures too, you wanna see some of them on my portable drive I carry around for just these occasions to bore the ***t out of people!?"

It's at that point I'd be looking for the nearest mugger to spare me the pain... Go away, you cock. :D

Well on the bright side now you've got a good reason to buy a POTN neckstrap eh?

I'll gladly wear that neck strap along with my 5D MK II's Bling Bling :D

Dave I got your back when the muggin happens.....

you never know they may want to steal the car instead and drive it to my mums house to do all sorts of nasty things...

lol - but now they can see its a 5d mk2 they will try a bit harder to steal it... thus mean a large steel tripod to the back their melons.....

OMG now I'm put off from buying the Canon 5D Mk II... and it's NOT because of the 9 point AF.

Canon puts "EOS 5D Mark II" on EOS 5D Mark II neckstrap. Who does this remind me off? Noink  who enjoys putting their users in danger of getting mugged and stuff.

oh Dave here i said it

" !! OMG !! shut up you stupid tit, go find something vaguely useful to obsess over!! "

Why do canon use II instead of 2.
I mean I might think it is version 11 of the camera.
Or with the 1 D and the 1 Ds mark 111. I didn't buy one coz I figured if they have taken 111 versions to get it this far it must be rubbish.
