Ducks you ask? Of course, what better says "I am a POTN family member," than a DUCK SHOT?

To honor the tradition of the Duck Shot, the Book Committee has decided to dedicate the back cover to the Duck! It will be a composite much like the one posted below. Everyone is eligible to enter. Everyone can submit up to 10 photos. We are going to need a lot of shot to make a good composite. Submission are now open for Duck shots. Submission will stay open through 16 November 2008. This is just the begining of Volume 3. Stay tuned for more details.

So pull out all those Duck shots and submit them HERE (http://thepotnbook.com/ducks.php) for the Back Cover.

For those of you who are interested the next 3 post contain a little bit about the history of the Duck shot.

A Little History Lesson:

Well according to some Ducks were irrelevant until sometime in 2004. It is widely believe that our own IanD started this phenominon with this very post.

Why to ducks do crazy things when I'm around

IanD even got out of bed a 5:00 am and tried to share some other wild life but was called out:

I was recently the brunt of some very cruel humor about never posting pictures, so today I took a few. I would like to dedicate these to the Canadian contingent noting that none of these pictures are from behind the birds, although one shot is of a bird showing its rear end to another one. Good taste and fear of banishment preclude me from commenting on that particular image although I do have several 'snappy' captions I might otherwise have used.

My good friend, Tom, who is the moderator Belmondo here, finally convinced me to buy a Canon Digital Rebel. I don't know when I've felt so enthused about a new toy and that enthusiasm only multiplied when I visited this forum and found so much useful information and so many beautiful images.
I don't pretend to have the experience that so many of you obviously do. However, I had so much fun taking these shots that I decided to post them even though I'm a rank newbie.
This is my girlfriend, Jennifer, who always makes my day a bit more beautiful. I am so glad I finally have a decent camera that I can use to capture a bit of her pulchritude with.
By the way, I don't have thin skin and am more than pleased with any criticism or suggestions from those of you who are real pros.

Wonderful images you lucky dude!

It seems that there were some early participants to the Show me you Duck tradition, they just did not know. it.

These shots are my second attempt to use my Canon 10D and Sigma 500mm f/4.5 lens. This is a great lens at half the price of a similiar length Canon. The color from the 10 D is just super. I shot Raw, Adobe RGB, Iso 400, converted in BreezeBrowser to 8 bit tiff and post processed in PSE2.

Hi Everybody!

I just found your forum complements of Google. I'm brand new to SLR photography and just purchased the Canon EOS Digital yesterday. Prior to this I spent the last few years using the Nikon 990 in automatic mode.

Today I took my first shots. The first group was of my own duck - a typical image for the newby I'm told.

Anyway the duck shots were in automatic mode and not too bad... maybe a little blown out in the highlights.

http://graphicspalmbeach.com/forum/CanonShots/firstshots1.html

Later in the day I went out again and with the sun to my back I took some shots of our oak tree and driveway. The ones shot in automatic jpg mode were terribly blown out in the sky area... I mean horrible.

So I set the camera to manual and raw. This improved the shots but still left me with some questions. If someone is interested in looking at one of them that I've cropped and marked up, it is here.
http://graphicspalmbeach.com/forum/CanonShots/Questions3.html
Anyway, I'm sure there is a better way to go about this, but I'm starting here for now.

And the tradition continues to build steam:

Ok, you all talked me into an "L" lens a week or so ago (70-200mm f/4L). Finally got to take a few photos in the back yard with it today.

As if by magic, a duck wandered through the yard! I swear from reading these forums that ducks are attracted to the "L" lenses...

http://www.condron.com/pics/fjc/fjc-duck3.jpg

(a bit overcast, so had to use ISO 200...)

Other paid omage to IanD

I'm a trainee duck photographer photographing a trainee duck :D :D

Some learned the hard way that Ducks come before moons:

I finally received one of the Canon 100-400 lenses yesterday. I was sweating getting it on time, since yesterday was also the full moon and I knew the rule was that you have to get a shot of the full moon before you can use this lens... either the full moon or a bunch of ducks.

The moon didn't make it up past the trees until midnight and since my day starts at 5am I didn't have time to play around a lot. I was also cramped in the corner of the spare bedroom where I set up the camera on my tripod and couldn't really get behind it to look through the view finder easily. So it's not as good as others have done in here.

I did use mirror lockup for the first time and also my cable release. I took a few in AF but it kept wanting to focus on the black sky so I put it in manual focus but I'm not sure if I got it focused correctly. I'll have to do it better next time, but at least I got this picture in under the wire.

So here is my picture of the full moon to go with the new lens.

http://www.sitnprettyphoto.com/display/moon8746.jpg

Mike

Excellent..

Now we need the requisiste Ducks and ruler shots.. oranges are good too..

Thanks guys.

Eric, I like the evening shots too... it means I don't have to stay up so late. The full moon this month, at least here in Oregon, came up late.

And I'm working on the duck shots. And if I can float a yard stick in the water with them, I can take care of both requirements at the same time.

Mike

This POTN Historian has concluded that by August 2004, the Tradition of the duck had finally take hold.

Here is another Opinion on the History of the Duck Shot.

As a long-time aficionado of the New Lens Duck Shot, I decided to take a look for the history of this.

The oldest Duck Shot that I can find in the Canon EF and EF-S lenses forum is from 19 Feb 2004 from JZaun.

He cracks a joke about "Duck P Mode" but I'm not convinced that this thread actually originated the entire New Lens Duck Shot tradition.

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=25583

So I dug further.

In the next oldest thread, 28 Feb 2004, JCalvert posted a shot of a duck (pic no longer available) and IanD cracks the joke "Welcome to the 100-400/Ducks Are Us Club."

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=26279&highlight=duck

Ah, our first hint of things to come I think, since IanD is a big proponent of the Duck Shot.

On 22 April 2004, FJC bought a new 70-200mm and "As if by magic, a duck wandered through the yard! I swear from reading these forums that ducks are attracted to the "L" lenses..."

http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=30559

After reading this thread I would have to say that this definitely shows a trend for New Lens Duck Shots, particularly from some of the jokes cracked in the replies. To me, it seems that there are implications that the trend had already started but had finally found it's way into the Lens forum.

So I truly believe that the true beginning of the New Lens Duck Shot tradition is buried somewhere in the old Share forum shots. The Share forums were re-organized a couple/few times, and there is a hidden forum with many old posts - very old posts that were deemed Too Old To Bother Moving into the new forum(s) when they were created. Only the Moderators have access to this forum, so let's hope that one is intrigued enough to go searching through it...

The sub form says "exactly 1024 pixels on the longest side and under 300Kb. "

So you need to turn the JPG compression up a bit more. Different shots with different detail will need more or less compression to get to the 300Kb limit.

Thanks for getting that one for me, Lester. Yup - we set a 300kb limit for the duck shots to keep server storage needs down a bit - they're not going to need to be at maximum quality for the composite picture...
