Just picked up a 40D last Friday and took off to Miramar sat. I borrowed a 70-200 2.8IS from a friend with a 1.4x convector.

Overall not bad. Using the 70-200+TC = what I call "Almost There-itis" as that combo isn't quite enough glass to fill the frame unless they're right on top of you (like your Fat Albert images...)
You've got quite a bit of dead sky around many of your shots.
I'm very intrigued by your shallow DOF detail shots of some of the static subjects. I might have to steal an idea or two for an EAA Fly In near me later this month.
Good Job!

You had some great shots from the air show, especially a few of the blue angels shots. My favorites were 191 (the angel taking off with the vapor trail distorting the background behind his plane, 245 (the aerial squad shot), 291 and 292. Better shots than I managed in Brunswick, Maine a few weeks back. The Angels are fun to try and catch good shots of though.

Nice set of shots in your gallery. Like the heritage shot with the moon in the background...though a slower shutter speed would look better ;) Thanks for sharing.

Yea I wasnt too picky on what pics I uploaded. Some shots I should have zoomed more, I tried cropping it but wasnt happy with the image quality so I left it.
This was the first time Ive ever been at an airshow, first time using a canon, a lens that long, and also a first time using a fast lens. You can almost say this was the first time Ive ever taken real pics haha. I forced myself to use manual mode, even it it meant crappy pics, thats the only way to learn right.
As for the DOF, Ive always like the way pics look with it, but never had a chance to go it because I was using a Olympus cam with a kit lens. So this was my first time trying that technique. I have some other pics that I took over the weekend, I'll post those up as soon as I get through processing them.

It also helps that the jets are bright blue, it makes the plane a lot more photogenic. It was a bit cloudy that day so grey planes + grey skys = boring.

thanks for the advice, too bad I realized that after i got home. I'm sometimes reluctant to change my shutter speed and fstop, I need to break that habit and try taking the same shot with different setting.

I could not forgive myself for missing MCAS Miramar this year, especially after close to home closure of Van Nuys airshow. After going through your album, now I have seen it all! Thanks to you.
Choice of lens looks good as when many would be totally handicapped by their long focal length heavy gears, you had the opportunity of moving around and pointing in every direction.
My favorite is all images of BAs.
You missed the raptor vapor by a fraction of second. Can't blame, we get too excited not to miss it all so at times shutter is released too soon. Don't know if you had the benefit of burst mode (Continuous mode especially with very nice speed of 40D at 6.5 fps). Trick is to have AF on AI Servo, Continuous mode, ISO one higher than norm, to ensure higher shutter speeds, TV or AV modes. 40D has one more advantage over other low to intermediate canon bodies and that is its ability to provide AF in narrower F stop upto 5.6, like 1D series so you could not go wrong to use a 2x TC as well for that closer reach when fly was high. The so called IQ loss is negligible considering how much more mag you get.
You did truly excellent. Next to a arranging a plan to buy that 70-200 for yourself, All you need now is seating down and do the post processing including a lot of cropping to brings the stars out.
Thanks again for your excellent coverage.

Looks like you and I are local. I was asking about the VN airshow as well and wondering what happened to that. I remember one summer at my grandma's house, I must have been like or 10, I saw an SR71 fly by real low in front of your yard, he must have been going to Van Nuys for the airshow. I went nuts and ran around the house.
Thanks for the tips.

So many of the smaller civilian airshows bit the dust this year because of the economy. A few are Van Nuys, Hemet, Wings Over Gillespie and the Huntington Beach Air Fair. These guys just don't have the massive budgets the military does.

Others have, unfortunately, gone the way of the DoDo Bird because of the crushing weight of liability insurance costs...

One thing I still don't get is having to pay to go into the airshow. I've looked up so many different airshows from members who have posted and mention that tickets were purchased. Though there is only one here for two days every year, they are free because they are on base....which I see is a good thing. The smaller local EAA chapters in the small civilian airfields are free entrance also, but only after a certain time of day.
