View Full Version : G10 external flash sync

If I remember correctly - the flash sync (external flash / hot shoe) on the G9 was 1/500 - much faster than any medium price range SLR. Does anyone know what the flash sync is for a G10? I don't see it in any specs online.

Hi there
page 266 in the owners manual says "The maximum flash syncro shutter speed is 1/250second."
best wishes

Thanks! it says that for the G9 as well, but it gets a little faster.

I'll confirm your original post.
At least the german manual says on page 97 (description of the Av mode), that the internal flash is synced to 1/500s (which definitly works) and the 1/250s is it for external flashes.
So here we stay again: what about the G10?

Is there a way to attach a PC cable to the G10?
I tried on the G9 but my hot shoe adapter I used
did not trigger my studio strobes, I had a safety
device in line to protect the camera, no worries there
but the camera would not trigger?
I had done this sucessfully with a Fuji S7000, but not with
the G9 or G7

Not sure Gary - good question (I'd love to know the answer too), but why not start another thread instead of hijacking this one?

Well, the thread is about flashes on the G10, didn't want to start more
threads in the same vein. I had started one before for the G9 and never
got an answer, sorry if this cluttered up your thread...

I was using my Skyport trigger on my G10 the other day with no fail.

G10 internal flash sync at 1/500 and external sync at 1/250. This is from trying with a 580EX II, also on pg 267 on the manual.

Of course, faster sync speeds are possible by switching the 580EXII to high speed sync.
With my G9 - and I suspect for the G10 - if the camera does not recognize the flash as being a Canon flash then very high sync speeds are possible. Here's a post from my blog in which I used a Nikon flash and synced at 1/2500 sec! This is a popular feature of the G9 because you can have the flash override the sun!

I believe you can use shutter speed over 1/1000 sec ( since all P&S are not dslr with mirror and curtain mechanism) if you set your camera and flash in manual mode. BTW if you have a canon flash you can cover the 4 smaller contact on the hotshoe with plastic sheet and it will think this is a non-canon flash
