Before & After 116

This game is to help those of us who are trying to learn new tricks when it comes to editing.

Here's the breakdown of the game. I will post a picture that I choose, resized to exactly 1024 pixels maximum on the long side. Outside of being resized it has to be unedited...meaning no adjustments to any levels, it has to look like it did as it came out of the camera.

The game will last 48hrs and whoever can produce the best edited image (as judged by me) will be picked and it'll be their turn to post their unedited picture for all of us to take a crack at.

The participants must have their "Image Editing OK" turned on and they must provide at least a simple breakdown of how they edited the image, some entrants are a little vague on this point, please give us all details so we can learn and share tips. For instance if you use the unsharp mask tool or Smart Sharpen, provide us with the adjustments you used so others can try them out.

You can post multiple images, but the first image you post will be the one that is judged - all other images will be considered for knowledge and tip use only.

Also, please keep all comments, be they positive or negative, to yourself until after the game has ended.

If you happen to be the winner of the game please start the next one with the title of the game and the following number. For example…the next game should read "Before and After #117".

Any edit, over-the-top creative or subtle, is encouraged!

I haven't played in a while...I thought I'd take a stab at this one...turn it into a vintage tinted postcard.

USM @ 75%
Nik ColorEffex:
Polaroid transfer
Paper toner (to desaturate)
Restored paled color to blueberries and leaves

okay (I'm still not really playing but I've been wanting to do this processing on something and thought it'd work great with this shot).

I used the topaz adjust filter (using the psychedelic preset with the noise dialed down and the artifacting adjusted way up)
then I used an NR on it
then I used pro photo frame's cheesecloth texture on overlay and then I masked out over the blueberries.
then I used a knockout action to put a frame on.

cloned grapes and added to the left over border
used clone\wet media brush to paint in areas over the border
Ran thru HDR again to add a bit more color and detail

I wanted to add snow and make them look more like Holly in the winter but couldn't figure out how to do that.

Ed – Good to see you back in B&F. I always enjoy the creative touches that you use. I found it interesting that you decided to turn the image into a “vintage post card”, because I actually used the image to create a note card myself.

Permie – I love living in your world, because I get wonderful ideas from examining your edits. The “cheesecloth texture” created an interesting effect that has a much finer detail than the typical “canvas texture” that I sometimes apply. Additionally, your colors were vibrant without looking overly saturated.

Richard – When I saw your edit, I was glued to the screen. Your “water color” effect enhanced the natural lighting effect I tried to achieve when I originally took the picture. It was about 9am when I took the picture, and while some of the leaves and berries caught the early light, the BG on the right was still in shadows. Your color adjustments used the deep tones well.

Monty – Your image seems to glow in an amazing way. The combination of color, light, softening and vignette is just fantastic. The BG seems just out of reach, while the stems & berries have just the right amount of sharpening.

Tracey – The color change to red was a unique twist. It would have been fantastic if you could have added snow. I remember somebody added snow in an early B&F, but I don’t remember how they did it.

And after one more look at them all, I’m going to give this one to Monty. Just superb. OK, give us a good one for B&F 117 !!
