This moth was about 2 inches long and would not land when feeding; but I managed to get a couple shots before it moved out of range. It's wingbeats reminded me of a hummingbird. ID?

I think you are on the right track. A Humming Bird Moth I believe. Very cool insect. Great shots!

Look at Clearwing Hummingbird Moth, and see if that fits.

Great shots.. I captured a few this summer. I thought it was a hummingbird at first.

Hummingbird moths are awesome.
They have the coolest feeding habit:
The float on their wings just like hummingbirds, but unlike them, their proboscis is flexible so they can visit dozens of (tiny) flowers without even moving. Their proboscis visits flower after flower in a matter of seconds.
I just love watching them in my backyard.
Beautiful shots by the way!
