Bogen Tripod Help

I have a Bogen 3021 with a 3-way pan and tilt head on it and I want to switch it out for a Manfrotto 3265 Pistol grip. I got the pistol grip second hand with no instructions as to how to install it onto the tripod. If i remonve the 3-way, then I am missing a threaded mount for the pistol grip to screw on to. What part do I need to adapt them in to one harmonous unit? I am very excited to start using them, but cant. Is there someone out there that can help? And then recommend where to get the part. ASAP!

The 3-way head should just screw onto the center column of the 3021. When you remove it from the center column, the 3265 should just screw on in its place. The center column has a 3/8-16 thread screw and the heads each have a socket for the same. Depending on where you got the 3265 from, if it was used the previous owner may have put a 1/4"-20 threaded insert in to allow them to use it on a different tripod.

This should just be a simple unscrew old head, put new one on....

You may (actually, probably) have to loosen three setscrews that are accessed from UNDERNEATH the top platform of the center column. They lock the head in place. You don't need to fully remove the three setscrews, but you need to back them out at least two or three full turns.

When you put the replacement head on, re-tighten the setscrews after the head is tightened in place.

'Tis my opinon you'll be removing the pistol-grip head before long, so don't forget how the transition is made.

Yeah, the 3265 puts the camera at the end of a long lever arm, so the ball cannot hold as effectively. I had considered the 3265 over 15 years ago, but could never find one which would lock sufficiently to not allow simple hand pressure to cause it to slip, and I tried stores all around town and failed to find one that could pass that test. Later, Bogen came out with a version of the trigger grip that put the camera close to the ball, and while that increases the working load, the handle grip sticks sideways and makes the tripod a trick to store or even hike around with.
