View Full Version : Is SanDisk Ultra II bad for the 20D?

Just bought 2 new 1.0GB cards (SanDisk Ultra II) to go with my 20D. I am having problems downloading the images (I get a '?' on the computer). The camera seems to read the card fine (i.e. takes pictures as normal and they are displayed in the viewer).
Does anyone know if the SanDisk Utra II cards are not compatible with hte 20D? Thanks.

I use a 1Gb Sandisk Ultra II and haven't had any problems yet. Are you trying to download the pictures through the camera or with a reader? Also, I doubt this is the problem, but the Ultra II line was recently replaced with a newer chipset, to bring the cost down and allow for larger capacities. Have you tried any other CD cards to see if you have the same problem?

I use a SanDisk reader. I have tried both cards. I have used a 512 Lexar High-Speed WA 16x with my 10D and uploaded throught the SanDisk reader to the FileViewerUtility software that came with the outfit for over a year without any problems. Is there some kind of setup with the camera that I missed? Thanks for your help.

I have two Ultra II 1GB cards, they work perfectly and very quickly with my 20D.

Did you format the card in your camera?

Also, I am shooting in RAW+JPEG and when the files come up tn the FileViewerUtility Software, only .JPG thumbnails with the '?' are coming up.

I have no problem with the 1 gig Sandisk Ultra II. One thing you can do is format the memory with your 20d and try again.

Another thing is did you install the Drive for the 20D on your computer?

Make sure you format w/ the camera and dont use your computer to delete any files from the Memory. It sometime cause corruption.

Hope this helps.

CyberDyne-
No (format the card), I just started shooting. I guess I should get the manual out. Is there any way to salvage the shots I already took? Thanks.

I still dont understand if u are transfering files directly from ur camera or from ur card reader.

Card Reader:
1) Your reader may be outdated and require a firmware upgrade to support the new chipset, and/or need an entire replacement to support the newer ones (no idea if card readers can get firmware upgrades).

Advice: Always use a card reader. Eventually, continued use of the USB port will degrade it due to friction and it will no longer be functional and/or loose resulting in data loss, so reserve direct Cam > PC connection for upgrades and/or rarities when u dont have the reader

Camera:
1) Your computer may not have the driver installed that recognizes when the camera is plugged into your computer, and therefore you must install such a software if it exists.

2) If you have an old operating system, incompatibilities are quite frequent with USB plug n' play devices and therefore u may need to upgrade, which will be beneficial beyond ur photography work.

I have a 20D and although i use my Lexar 80x 1 gig CF cards, I used to have a pair of Ultra II's and they worked fine on three of my computers (Win2000, XP Home, XP Pro). If it still doesnt work, then perhaps exchange ur cards for the older models if the retailer still has some, and/or exhcange directly with SanDisk (might be a small fee)

Sounds like you are still using the old 10D software. The File viewer utility combines the thumbnails when you shoot RAW+JPEG, and the 10D software would not be able to read 20D RAW files.

Pcasciola-
Will the upgrade to the Software (i.e. loading the 20D) still accept the 10D data; as I still plan to use both cameras and interchange the cards. Thanks.

King, I guess software will be backward compatible ...

I used the 1GB Ultra II right out of the box and have had no problems with it. I haven't installed any of the Canon software instead using PSE3 and the only issue I have is that a direct connection between the camera and my laptop only loads the JPG's in PSE3, but my Lexar card reader loads both the JPG and the RAW.

You got me there. If you post a RAW somewhere that I can grab it, I'll be happy to try it out for you.

EDIT: I assume it would be backward compatible with 20D and older Canon RAWs, but can't say for sure.

Thanks to all. I uploaded the 20d software (to include the EOSFileViewer). I guess I just assumed that the FileViewerUtility that came with my 10d would work just fine (guess again!).
Now all of my cards are recognized by the new software, but my newest SanDisk cards will not work with my Card Reader. Undoubtedly, it is out of date and I need to invest $20 in a newer card reader (I could only upload my images from the new cards by going directly from the camera - not the preferred method).
Again, thanks to all for helping me out.

Great. I'm glad that was it. I had a feeling when you said it's the same software you had been using for the past year, and then saying you shot RAW+JPEG was the dead giveaway.

Good luck, and enjoy your new toy.

did you check the sandisk site for firmware for the reader...
my ultra II 1 gig works fine so far with my 20D. i had been using it as a portable hard drive to go between my place and friends houses. so i had to format in camera before the first shot.
since i have only had it since monday only jpg's.
after i get a chance to soak up all the new to me SLR things i hope to give RAW a go.

hmm........I have 5 ultra II 512's........... never any problems like this with any.

I hate all bonus software. Use windows explorer to open the card and drag the files to your disk.

My 512MB, 1GB and 2GB Ultra IIs have all worked flawlessly.

I also use a Sandisk reader (12 in 1) and all is good there too.

Kingston,

welcome to the forum! 8)

Just a small question ... would you mind it very much to edit your first post that in the meantime the problem is solved (let's call it 'user error' )?

Saves us all a long read and helps to keep stupid rumors from occuring.

Best regards,
Andy

PS: Please don't take this personally, but we've already seen too much of this.

I've also got 2 1GB Sandisk cards and have not had any problems at all.

BTW, how is fast this Sandisk card reader?
Has anybody seen any benchmarks?
I am just thinking about the device...

Just in case. I have had a similiar problem occur twice, but figured it was the card reader.
My solution was to unplug the card reader and then plug it in the computer again with the card already inserted. This solved my problem.

Just thought I would offer just in case you didn't try yet. My computer recognized the reader and 'saw' the card, but did not show any files. when I unplugged and plugged it back in it worked fine. I can't remember though if I plugged it back into the same slot or not, which I have noted has made a difference in the past.

Just my opinion,

This happens to me once and a while too. I have about a dozen USB devices connected to my computer, with a mix of 1.1 and 2.0 devices, and every so often I put my card in and it either appears empty or I get an error. I usually reboot, because when I get into that state I also sometimes start having odd problems with my scanner and printer as well, but if I'm in a hurry, unplugging the card reader and plugging it back in always works.
