Hey all. I just bought a A590 IS. This is the first time having a canon with all these settings. I am trying to understand the Tv, P, Av modes. Can somebody help me in laymans terms LOL? I read the manual but am still confused

P is pretty much the same as the "Green Box" full auto mode, where the camera will set both shutter speed and aperture to give you a decent exposure. Unlike Green Box, P lets you set the ISO (sensor sensitivity to light).
Tv (Shutter Priority) lets you set the shutter speed (Time) and varies the aperture to give a good exposure. Since you have a limited range of apertures, this may give you over- or under-exposed pictures without flash or ISO adjustments, but if you need a certain shutter speed to stop, or capture, motion it's the way to go.
Av is Aperture priority. You set the aperture and the camera will set an appropriate shutter speed. Depending on the camera you may want to do this to control depth of field (generally an exercise in futility in the PowerShots) or to get decent exposure at the fastest (or slowest) possible shutter speed. So you'd set your lens wide open and you'll get a good exposure at the fastest usable shutter speed. However, this may not be fast enough to stop any subject motion even then.
