I am thinking of getting a wider lens, at the moment i have Canon 28 -135 IS & 100 - 400 IS L.
does anyone have any views on the sigma 20mm
(canon 20mm out of wifes price range).
it is on offer for £269, or should i add £100 and get the 17 - 35?

I was exactly in the same boat like you, but after my bad luck with Sigma 17-35, I became once bitten twice shy! So I kept looking into used lens Dept in B&H, KEH, Adorama and ultimately found a Canon 20mm F2.8 in 10 condition (can not tell if it is used) from B&H in 299$, which is cheaper than a Sigma 20mm. Boy, I can not say how happy I am now days. Compared to my mushy Sigma 17-35, it is tack sharp with no ugly purple fringing so hallmark of Sigma 17-35. No wonder it comes from the same stable of 50mm, 100mm macro, 135mmL, 300mmL series of ultra sharp lenses.

The sermon is be patient rather than be sorry.

Terry,

personally, I would (and did!) go for the Canon version! I have read many comparisons on the net, and the Sigma sounds good enough, but apparently the corners are soft, and you have to stop it down a couple of stops to get anywhere near the image quality of the Canon. In that situation, you might as well buy the Canon f/2.8 version, and be done with it (and get USM anf FTM focusing as well)!

The Canon is less prone to flare, too, and the colours appear to be truer than with the Sigma.

I'd look for a second-hand Canon. :)

Many thanks for the info, as i have not received any "Fors" i will take both of your advice and look for a 2nd hand canon.

as this will be the last lense i will need to buy, i must get it right.

again many thanks.
