View Full Version : That was annoying....

I just set off to do some IR shots of the nearby fields. I thought with the sunset coming in and a light mist...it'd look pretty awesome.

So I walk down and setup, I'm just getting the focus right and screwing the filter on and I hear a quad bike stop behind me....here we go...

Old man: What are you doing here?!
Me: *looks at camera on tripod*
Old man: Well?! Come on! out with it!!!
Me: I'm taking pictures
Old man: But that's MY field
Me: errrm.....right....what difference does that make, I'm a photographer, therefore I take pictures
Old man: Not of my field your not

So I turn to ignore him as all I needed to do was press the shutter button to then continue my arguement, So I set it for a 30 second exposure, and *click* it starts taking the picture

Old man: you should have more respect for your elders!!!!
Ok, so I snapped...

Me: To be fair, you don't have any signs up saying you don't want any pictures taken, I'm taking a picture of the bloody sunset for starters, which isn't owned by anyone! And what harm is it doing, I'm not actually on your field, I'm behind the gate, I'm doing nothing wrong. Unless you can prove I am breaking the law I'm not moving a muscle until I'm finished!

*click* - ahh awesome. The picture is done :D

Old man: Where do you live?
Me: Why, are you going to come and take pictures?
Old man: nope, I'm reporting you to the police for a public disturbance
Me: Riiight...sure, I'm done here anyway.

So I pack away my stuff with the old man standing there looking smug. And I said "I'll be back here tonight, to get some shots of the moonlit field, yes I mean your field as well"

Old man: What time?!
Me: Whenever I feel like it, like I said. I'm breaking no laws.

The guy looked stunned and couldn't think of a reply, so feeling good about myself I proudly march away.

I just got into the flat, turn on the camera and hit the play button

"INSERT CF CARD"

Oh man what a bummer now you got to go back.

Thats why the first thing I do on a new camera or when it has been reset is to change the setting "shoot with no card" to NO.

No.

Its a public road which I live on, I literally walked up the road from my flat, and to the left is fields, i was standing on the pavement!

you could call the local police, tell them what happened, and see if they have any issues with how you were shooting. If they are OK with it, go back. And don't forget to put the card in first.

Why call the police? What he did wasn't illegal, there's no reason you should have to get police permission to do something legal. Tell the old fart to shove it, and let him borrow your cell phone to call the cops. Just make sure you have your video camera set up as well as your digital camera when the cops put the old guy in his place.

End of argument then really.

I wonder if he will be there waiting to have a go at you again when you go back for another attempt with your CF card!

but funny story

I think I would have handled it a little different, saying that as I wasn't there to get the full impact. i would have tried to explain how "beautiful" the field looks when the sunset light streaks across it. Then I would have offered the grumpy guy a picture of his field, only once I could get him to loosen up a little. Turning your back on him surely was going to get a rise.

I think the biggest objection that people have of getting thier things photographed is that they don't really know what we want or are after. Once they understand that it is for our personal pleasure they usually back off.

Some people just like being cranky. I always try to be friendly but when that does not work I use sarcasm.
Tell the guy that you are not there to photograph his field but you are here to take photos for a magazine. He will ask you which one then tell him Grumpy Old Man News and would like his photo.

Haha!
That's a shame, I've done similar without a memory card before. Usually I find out when I'm already there. After wasting a long drive, have all my gear, batteries, tripods, filters. Setup for first shot, click. Review - shows momentarily before - Insert CF Card. :o

Tell the old fart to shove it, Yeah that will really calm the old fart down and change his mind.

There's an even better lesson: make sure "Shoot without card" (or equivalent) is set to "OFF".

Yup no CF card is a problem but so is takeing pictures of privite property without permissionNot in the UK it's not. Perfectly legal to shoot somebody else's field as long as you're in a public area.

This is why I don't let my camera take pictures when the CF card is not inserted.I don't understand. Why is that setting even there? I mean, no card=no point. Setting your camera to capture an image when it has nowhere to store it is akin to taking half a roll with no film in the camera (yes, a mate of mine did just that - then complained that I loaned him the camera and didn't put any film in it).

I believe the camera is set up like that so if you are tethered, you don't need a card in since you can just dump the images right to your PC skipping the card all together

This story reminds me of what my buddy did . . . he borrowed a moving trailer from a friend, and then drove 4 hours to the apartment he was moving out of. He backed the trailer into the driveway, then opened the trailer to start loading, but discovered the trailer was full!! Turns out his friend's wife had decided that the trailer was the perfect place to store all the stuff she couldn't fit in the basement, but didn't bother to tell anyone . . .

So I wonder is it legal to ride a motorized (it was motorized wans't it?) quad bike on that piece of road?
