I made a in-goal camera housing this summer and finally got to test it out.

Nice, unusual shots

I definitely like the angle / perspective of these shots.

My only question, though, is how do you control the camera? In other words, do you have some sort of remote link that allows you to see what the camera sees or is it simply a matter of spray-and-pray? I would imagine both timing and framing would be difficult without it.

Any pics of this housing? And where you placed it?

Do league regulations allow such a thing!?

I will get some pic's of the set-up next week. I was running late for this game and didn't have the time to take any shots.

The housing is NHL specs

The camera is fired with pocket wizards. can't see the images till after the game.
Not the spray and pray. It's more of controlling when I take a picture with my hand-held.

As far as framing.. It's set and there for the game knowing that most of the shots coming from left side of the net (most players are right handed) the camera is set slightly towards that direction.

Since it is fired by PW's you will have a fair amount of toss away shots. So load the camera with the largest card you got. and delete them later. I am going to be putting a 8 gig card in there for the games. I could in theory change cards between periods. But I don't want to have to have 3 cards just to do the swapping. So it's either an 8 or a 16 gig card. I have to pick up that this week.

Cool! I never knew they did hockey remotes..

Did you strobe the arena too? OT, but any tips on strobing hockey? :)

No these are not strobed. I shot hockey with ambient light. This rink is a college D1 rink so it is very well lite. For these I under expose to keep my shutter speed up and bring the exposure back in lightroom.

How thick is the Lexan? Did you bend it yourself with heat?

I have a 15mm in there. I didn't have the time I needed to make sure the camera was positioned correctly. It was cocked a little to much so, these are cropped a bit. If the camera was level I think they would have been fine.. I know it's a 1.6 crop camera but considering the angle I had on the camera the next run should be golden..

I was looking for that post...

NHL specs are 6mm lexan. I used a heat gun and a sheet metal break.

That is insane, any chance of getting a little tutorial on this housing? I am using goal remotes in soccer as just the bare camera and Im praying it doesnt get hit wrong so a lexan shield would be great.

Bravo - well done.

Have you had the players briefed that there is a camera in the net? I recall a story about the NHLers who were shooting at the net cams intentionally for a target during warm up. The league had to get them to stop. The shield would take incidental impact but not repetitive. They now also use different nets during the warm up to be safe.

Dave, this is really coming along from when you first started doing it. These are great shots.

Do you think this would work OK with the 10-22 lens?

Thanks This was the second test and final one. The first game is Saturday. I was hoping to get a 8 gig card so I don't have to keep changing the between periods. I'll have it for the next game B&H and the holidays. I might just go there on Thursday to pick 1 up.

I was looking for your post on the other forum Mike...

Any 1.6 crop camera that would be a good choice. I didn't have much time to set the camera to have the proper horizon so these are cropped down.. Saturday next week I should have the final results spot-on

I would just cringe every time a slapshot from the top of the circle goes in low! A side impact would be tough to deflect.

I have lexan on the sides and back as well. While the lexan on the side, back and top are not sealed The housing is put together pretty tough.
