like many of us (photographers) i hate being without a camera - you feel naked, don't you? so many times i used to pass something and think 'that'd be a great shot' only to return with a camera and it just wasn't the same (you've been there too, right?) so, i made a point of ensuring i've got one with me all the time - either my wee canon g9 or a small bag with my backup dslr, flash and lens or two. granted, i've often had to endure my long-suffering wife asking why i'd 'carry that bag around all day and sometimes not even take the camera out?' "just in case" was always the answer - just as it was on thursday 25th sep when we unloaded the car at the metro centre in gateshead...
i'd driven my wife and a couple of colleagues down from glasgow for a training course with her work and planned on spending a couple of hours wandering the shops or maybe try and get some shots in the city centre. while walking through waterstones, i saw a huge queue outside and discovered that ross kemp was launching his new book that very day and was signing copies later that afternoon! so, figuring that if you don't ask, you don't get, i asked the store manager if she had someone taking photos for her. long story - short, she was over the moon to get a photographer foc as well as getting some shots for her own use (company newsletter etc.), in return, i could do what i wanted with the shots.
ross turned up and we all had a great time with loads of people asking to get their photos taken with him (lots got friends to take them with their camera phones etc.) but i was asked by so many people that i ran out of business cards until my wife arrived with some in her purse (in fact, when people mentioned to ross that they wish they'd brought a camera, he directed them to me and actually put some business my way!)
two weeks down the line, i've had several orders (order vales are now into 3 figures) from a gallery I put on my website and i have a press agency who are now syndicating the pictures for me.
not bad for a spare afternoon walking round a shopping centre, eh?
so, as the title goes, we really should...
always carry a camera. (just remember to take plenty of business cards)
