I just bought a DReb exactly 30 days ago today. I am totally new to photography so I had no idea how long that model had been on the shelves or that a new camera was getting ready to take it's place. The store that I bought it from has a 21 day return policy on digital cameras. I discussed my situation with them and they agreed to take the camera back with the addition of a 15% restocking fee(approx. $150.00.)
In your opinion, do you think the new Rebel XT is worth the extra $150.00(assuming it will be priced $999.99) that I would be spending to get it...when it does hit the shelves. To me it sounds like it will be ...but as I mentioned previously I have little knowledge on this topic thus far.
Thanks

It is a bit early to tell for sure, but it is looking a little like a no-brainer!

Did you spend $999 on your current DRebel? If so, then I would say spend the extra $150 and get the XT because you've already paid much more than the DRebel is typically selling for these days. Might as well get the latest and greatest for your (approximately) $1000.

it's going to be a while before you can get your hands on one.
the same thing happened to me. i bought a d60 with a 2 week return policy. 2 weeks and a day later the 10 came out. I lost a grand...

The 350D is DEFINITELY a much better camera than the 300D and I think it is absolutely worth the $ 150!
The limitations that the 300D has compared to the 10D (no flash exposure compensation, no selectable metering modes, no mirror lock-up, ...) have all been removed, the startup time is 0.2s just like the 20D (instead of 3 seconds), etc... I'd definitely go back and get the 350D for $ 150 extra.
But you might have to wait a while before you get the 350D, it will probably take some time before it's available in the shops.

Welcome, and return it asap, take the hit, get the xt.
For that matter you can pick up a 20d for around 1250 used (lightly) anymore. It is way more cam for the buck than the Dreb.

from what I have read I would definetly go back and get the 350D. Mind you, you will probably take a bigger hit on the return price of the 300D because the XT won't be available for a little while. Either that, or you can return now for a refund and promise to deal with them when you buy the XT (or store credit) and be without your camera for a bit. The startup time, increased buffer size and 3fps is a huge draw for me...when I first got the 300D, I didn't really notice it as much, but since I started toying around with aviation photography I have really started to notice the Rebels shortcomings in these areas.
I don't know if the money thing is an issue (or if your new to DSLR photography), but if not I think I would lose the extra little bit of money on the 300 and get used to using a DSLR.
From my opinion, I think I will just skip the 350D and go right to the 20D, but only because I have had the rebel for 5 months and will probably lose at least 1/2 of what I paid for it. If I could get a decent trade in price I would most likely go to the 350D and then buy the 20D also, in the future...
Good luck with your decision, welcome to the forum!!

Yes, return it for the 350D. Put your name on their waiting list so you get one ASAP.

BTW... is it just me or does the flash look much higher now (higher even than the 20D?)

Well if u bought ur D300 at $999 then that means ur gonna be paying 300 bucks for an upgrade, as you gotta pay the 150 restock charge plus the additional 150 to cover the loss, unless that 150 counts the restock and the loss in one. But anyways, assuming its 150 total, then yes definetly go for the upgrade as ur gaining almost 2 MP and lots of other neat features. Better then buying a low-midrange glass for ur D300, as upgrading the cam will give you an improvement in general to your camera, on top of any glass you add to it. So I say go for it.

Thanks for everyones replies. I guess In the big scheme of things $150.00 really isn't that much money. I will have to open an in-store credit...which isn't too bad. I probably wouldn't be totally happy with the DRebel knowing that something better had just taken it's place(in the same price range.) The camera shop does sell used equipment so I will also keep my eye out for a used 20D.
Thanks again!

Keep the 300D for 2 years and enjoy it. It's a very capable camera and if you are new to photography you won't miss anything the 350D has over it.

I just bought the 300D also. But I only paid 438.85 (after the triple rebate, I also bought two lenses :p )
So, I think I will keep my 300D and install the hacked firmware after I learn all the functions
( Yes, I am a NOOB! )
I mostly use it for dog shows, herding and agility (K9) trials.
I'm sure eventually I'll upgrade, but for now the 300D is a great camera.

Ya know...the dReb is still a great camera. Go with the hack and have at it! I'm not getting rid of my dReb for quite a while. Jim

The speed of the 20D is great, just amazing after the 300D, I imagine the 350D will be similar... well worth the upgrade price for that and the larger buffer.
