Hello all,
I have a 20D right now, shoot alot of motocross..I use 99% of the time a 70-200mm f/2.8 IS lens on it and and for a novice photographer I feel I get some decent shots.. A friend emailed me and asked if I was interested in buying his canon 1D.. I know the af on it is unreal.. thing is my 20D is 8 mp and the 1D is 4mp.. The 1d has a bigger sensor tho.. He offered it to me for $1500 bucks with two batteries.. I know it is very well taken care of and has a good pedigree :) the camera has taken some Racer x magazine cover shots and renthal ad's.. So what do you guys think? Will the 1D take a better photo than my 20D? I love the 20D and think it's just an awesome piece of equipment but for sports the 1D suppose be great? What ya think?

I've made 11x14 prints, 20x30 prints, and 8x10's and 5x7's all of 'em, from my 1D. And i'll tell ya what, they look darn fine.

The only reason i'd want the 20D is for the noise levels, the 8mp is becoming less of an issue for me.

$1,500.00 is a great price for a 1D in good shape...

However,. this is a tough decision.

I traded my 1D for a MkII some time ago and use a 20D as a second body.

I have to say that the 20D, though no 1D MkII it certainly holds it's own and works almost seemlessly as a second body for a MkII user.

this says a lot,.. when I used a 10D as my back up,. the drastic differnece in timings between the two,. and feel,. made switching from one to the other more of an issue. I don't see this so much with the 20D.

To me this tells me that the differnce in use between the two is now less significant.

I'm sure you'll be hapy with either one.

Bottom line,. your comparing Image quality and resolution to a slight advantage in focus speed and tracking.

The more i think about it, i think you'd really be better off buying more lenses. If your willing to spend $1500 you could get say...the 120-300 f/2.8 sigma. I bet that would make a nice motocross lens (i wouldnt know, i've never shot it).

It is indeed a tough call though there are MANY times when i wish i had a backup body. And i can assure you if i was going to get one right now it would be a 20D. Until the sun goes down, because there the 20D would own the night.

timmy thanks for your thoughts..I have one of the best mx lenses you can get ..the canon 70-200 mm f/2.8 IS... most pro mx shooters use that and also the 300 f/2.8 .. I can go with a 1.4 teleconverter on my 70-200 and it will make it a 280mm...
I am going to hold off on the 1D and wait to save for a 1Ds next year.. I have alot to learn and im just starting to learn landscape photography (bought my first cokin p stuff today )... If I was to come across a good deal on a canon 300mm I would get it..
