I think I may have narrowed my choice of printers down to the i9900 or the ip8500. The one thing that is still stopping me is that I have heard the Canon printers (and ink) only produce good results on Canon paper. Does anyone have any experience using these printers with other brands of paper?

Nope. Check the sticky on top. Illford and Kodak Ultima seems to work best :)

Good luck!

I have a Canon printer and have used several different brands of paper. I think the quality was just as good (at least for me) with X-brand as it was with Canon paper. I think the biggest thing I have come across is using paper that is not as heavy as a good quality paper. So I still use X-brand, just always buy a heavy one.

Ilford Gallerie Classic Pearl produces very nice results on my i9900 with Canon inks. Ilford also provides profiles at

Hope that helps.

I have not yet tried the ilford classic perl paper, but I have tried the Printasia Perl ( made by ilford, but made for both pigment and dye based printers ), and even that shows up better than Canon Photo Paper Pro, and its competivily priced too.

I tried the Kodak Ultima on my i6000D but I don't like it as well as the Canon paper.

I'm a strong supporter of buying the same brand paper as printer, with the exceptions of "specialist" companies like Ilford, or "specialist" paper like the Kodak Ultima.

This is generally a waste for your day-to-day printing since it may be tough to get good quality paper from Canon (that is, you can often only get photo-grade). In which case I'll use a very high quality day-to-day HP or Kodak paper.

I've had good luck with Epson matte paper with the canon ink.

I use no-name heavy paper for personal prints, for 1/3 the price and they come out just as good. For custy's (sorry always wanted to fit that word in a sentence lol - funny things kids say these days) i go with Kodak or Ilford.

I was given a box of Costco "Kirkland" brand paper, 10mil glossy, about $19.00/125 8 1/2 x 11 sheets. I was surprised, not bad for everyday stuff. Anyone ever use it?

Ilford Classic Pearl. I buy it by the box of 100 sheets. Output from my Pixma 8500 is stunning. Use the Ilford profiles and follow their suggested print setings.

I use whatever is on sale, Canon, Kodak, Epson, (HP is never on sale here) and Staples brand. I am happy with them all except when I print on the wrong side of the paper.

Yeah, printing on the wrong side of the paper would produce non-top notch results I'm sure!! LOL!!

Anybody got any hot tips of where to buy the Ilford Classic Pearl on the net??

And I have yet to experiment with matte paper. Is it worth it??

Btw, I have a Canon Pixma ip5000.

I have a Canon i560 and found Epson paper to work best. HP, Canon, and Kodak Ultima all print grainy and course.

You might want to wait until the Epson R1800 comes out in a couple of months, which I am waiting for. It's just being unveiled at the PMA show now.

Thanks for all the info of paper choices. I just got a digital camera (A95) and I already had an i560 printer. When I started to print my first pictures I was not happy, the print quality on Canon paper was not good. I tried som HP paper that I had at home and they came out better. I am still trying to figure out how I can get the A95 and i560 to like each other better. I bought both after reading alot about their picture quality, but so far I'm not totally impressed.

I have a Canon i850 using original BCI3e inks. I get the best results with Canon PR-101 and PP-101 papers. Period. I've tried both the Ilford Classic Pearl and Kodak Ultima Satin and they just don't seem to take the ink as well as the Canon stuff, it tends to pool in the shadowy areas and fine detail is slightly grainy. I can't find profiles for these papers on the i850 so I used the settings they reccomend and they just aren't as good.

But this might be because I've got an i850 and not an i9900 :-)

The best thing you can do is try a wide range of paper, printing the same image using all the same settings (apart from paper specifics). It might cost alot at first, but it'll save you in the future. I did this a while ago and that's why I always buy Canon.

Hope this helps.

Gary.

I don't know what it might be labelled up as in the U.S. but try some Fuji Multijet Premium Glossy 270gsm.
It delivers brilliant results with both my S9000 ans S820 printers, and it's very well prived too - equivalent of about 30pence per A4 sheet.
