View Full Version : Dream lens....

Ok...a fun topic.
Lets say that you got the once in a lifetime chance to approach Canon and have them design the ultimate lens for your use.....money is no object. Things such as physics, weight, size and whatnot still apply. What would you have Canon design and build for you? (for the sake of this topic, you can't build something just to sell it....it has to be something built for your use). Maybe a great low light portrait lens or an awesome macro lens or a long reaching birding lens....whatever.
What is your dream lens and why? :)

1-5000mm F.95 USM IS weighing only 5 pounds. And black.
SInce money was no object, I'm sure someone can defy physics and come up with that lens that weighs 5 pounds, not 5 tons...

LOL...that's why I made sure to put the disclaimer in that physics apply ;) I want to keep the ideas in the general realm of reality :)

After thinking a few minutes about it....I think my "dream lens" would be a somewhat portable hiking/wildlife zoom lens. The 100-400 comes close but something with a little more reach would be awesome. How about a 300-600 F5.6 zoom with a MFD that allows magnification of at least 1:2....oh yeah, don't forget the latest generation of IS :)

My needs are simple. A 70-500L 2.8 USM IS with 1:1 Macro would be all i need.

Surely a great setup but very difficult to weild I would imagine. Probably next to impossible to get off a sturdy tripod.

Here are a few candidates (these lenses are for FF-usage, which I'm not currently on):
- A 12-26mm f/2.0L IS ultra-wide angle zoom. Preferably with a 5-6 stop IS.
- A 24-80mm f/2.0L IS zoom would be nice. 5-6 stop IS.
- A 70-220mm f/2.0L IS medium telephoto zoom with a 5-6 stop IS.
Basically, just flashed-up versions of the 16-35/24-70/70-200 combo we have now.

You'll want more than just biceps for that. More like also stable strong shoulders, forearms, wrists and a good back.

Presumably, users of this forum already are aware of the Sigma 200-500mm f/2.8 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/551437-REG/Sigma_597110_200_500mm_f_2_8_EX_DG.html) unit priced at US $25,000.

I agree with all three above and would add a 200-500 F4 IS... basically my current set up just faster... but I would keep a crop body.... well actually since were dreaming any way I'd have 1d III

Not really, maybe if it had more on the long end. Ive had my eyes on the 17-40, but I would love for another 10mm added onto it.
If you just wanted a 17-55 without the IS, why not take a look at the Tamron 17-50?
Because I want USM, and I love the L color. I know I could PP to get the look but Im not a big fan of relying on photoshop to get my images to look how I want. I prefer to get things right in the camera.
My list was mostly a way for canon to fill some gaps. I had the 70-200 lineup in mind. Since photography is a hobby I cant really justify buying a 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200.
17-50 F4L IS and 70-200 F4L IS would be my ideal lineup, along with my 50 1.8 and 430EX would be my ideal setup.

A really great lens...would work very well on crop sensor or full frame...
EF 16-75mm f/2.8 IS. For full frame it would cover ultra-wide and standard zoom. For crop sensors, it would cover wide angle and standard to medium-telephoto zoom.
I'd pay $1k for a sharp lens with those stats.

Very simple and possible, an EF 55-300, constant f/2.8L IS. Internal zoom, USM, I don't really care how big it is, removable tripod ring, FTM, min focus distance of approx. 12". That would complete my dream trinity, 10-22, 17-55 and 55-300. I could shoot with these lenses until I die.
