I have Directv and access to lots of channels, I never see any photography programs. Are there any channels or programs that air about of photography that I am missing?

DIY Network (channel 230 for DirecTV) had two shows: Digital Photography (http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/shows_dpg/0,2044,DIY_14302,00.html) and The Whole Picture (http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/shows_dtwp/0,2499,DIY_23301,00.html). I am not sure if they are currently airing them. (It seems like they had very basic, beginner type information)

I haven't seen many (make that any) photography technique shows on TV, but photographic inspiration-- it's everywhere. Nat-Geo and the Discovery Channel has lots of good stuff, Animal Planet for well, wildlife and stuff. Learn about lighting from movies etc.

Ovation channel 274 has in the past run a series I think called the "Genius of Photography".
It shows different photographers and how they see things.

great question. I have only stumbled across one or two and they have always been very basic, hardly even interesting to me. I wish I could stumble on the ones mentiuoned above!

Well not exactly a regular program (there have been 4 seasons so far) and it may not be something you get on Directv, but PBS has a really good series called Art:21. It may be kind of hard to find in a rental store/library, but you can rent the discs through Netflix. It's not just about photography, but there are usually a few photographers that are covered each season.

National Geographic over here in Singapore showed "Wildlife Photographer", a one-hour-episode of two french male and female photographers in Africa. Very interesting to me.

And Nat Geo also showed a series called "Genius of Photography" where they took viewers back to the early 1900s or even 1800s etc.

A couple I've seen recently were Evelyn Cameron: Pictures From A Worthy Life on PBS (http://www.evelyncameron.com/index.php?Action=ShowMedia&Target=DVD-1), NATURE presents CHRISTMAS IN YELLOWSTONE (http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/yellowstone/index.html) also on PBS (a large part is about photographer Tom Murphy), Risk Takers episode about Jim Oltersdorf (on Discovery). One I have on DVD but haven't watched yet is National Geographic's The Photographers (http://www.amazon.com/National-Geographics-Photographers-Keith-David/dp/0792299957).

The show on Evelyn Cameron is very well put together and quite fascinating. A must watch for anyone interested in the history of photography.

There's also an online show called Wild Photo Adventures (http://www.wildphotoadventures.com/watch.html) which looks interesting.

The same shows aired here in Canada as well. The "wildlife photographer" was really good.

Just watched a program on The CW called "In Harms Way" about two photographers in the middle east photographing a conflict between Israeli's and Palestinians and then trying to sell their photos to news agencies. I don't kow if its a regular series about photogs or they were just this weeks subject matter.

I just watched the same show as Hickory... it was decent but more about the effort than the photograph.

If you have Tivo just do a search with keywords and use words like Canon, Camera, Photography, photoshoot, etc.

Do that once a week or so and you'll find some stuff.

What type of programs are you looking for?

"Documenting the Face of America (http://documentingamerica.org/Movie.html)" has been on PBS a few times. I had it on my DVR from when it was last on, but the DVR died on Thursday, and we got a new one. Now I don't see where it will be on again.

+1 Does anyone know when they will be adding more shows for season 2?

Edit - Update, I emailed Wild Photo Adventures and Doug Gardner emailed me back, and stated he is shooting for this summer to have Season 2 online.

Fashion TV (in europe anyway) are having a "photographers" special weekend at the moment.

Rarely any talking or interviews with the photographer, but if you have an interest in fashion photography you will be able to figure out whats going on and see what gear is being used.

travels to the edge with art wolfe

Which, IMHO, is worthless. Yes, it is a very nice program with lost of great videograpy, and a few pretty pictures from Art displayed, but it is not really a show about photography. It is a travelogue just about like any other with Art as host. In context of actually teaching photography techniques, Art gives very, very little instruction... if any.

I actually quite liked "travels to the edge with art wolfe" and thought it was one of the most entertaining photography videos I've seen.
I really enjoy seeing how an amazing photographer like Art works in the environment and his selection of gear for the situation. I thought his commentry on the shots he is trying to achieve was also useful. :)
Seeing the result of the shots that he makes and the gear he was using, you can almost guess much of the techinal info IMO.

there are a few decent ppdcasts on iTunes but most are just audio. Still really good to listen to though!
