Got it this morning . . . I think I will keep it. Gosh, please excuse me here . . . but this thing made even me look good today. Anyway it was so cold last night (sub zero cold) that all the open water is mostly frozen up today. This is good for me 'cause I know where the water will be open. Anyway this is perhaps the best of the 'Green Heads.' Excuse me the second post of a mallard . . . but I needed something to test the new Canon 1.4 TC on other than little birds in the backyard.

Thank you Ian . . . not up to your "Professional Standards" but good enough for me. I think I am in love with long lens. I find that the manual focus to be a help and not a disadvantage. I have to be more selective, slower and do the focus myself. I think this is a good thing, at least for me. Spray and Pray works, lol, but this is more what I am after.
I don't know how it looks on your monitor(s) but at full size here, even for a common green head . . . wow. I am a happy Canon customer, again, and again.

RJ, beautiful Greenhead! Just curious, what type of filters are you putting on your 100-400?
Mine finally came in and I got a Tiffen kit with the 812, CP and UV. That question goes for everyone, what types of filters do you use?

I got the 77 CP is all. I am not a filter user as a general practice. However this may change. I am doing some work on finding one that has ANY advantage (does a UV do anything but . . .) over not having one.

RJ great detail and fantastic colors. This Mallard Photo (you call them greenheads?) is again a great image taken by you. I think you do great with the long lenses you refer to being your preference. Hey, that's your style.

RJ,
He's a beauty (like everyone says). The 1.4 with the 100-400 looks like a great combo. Do you have samples shot at both ends with the 1.4? Looks like I'll have to brown bag it a little longer and save for a 1.4xTC.

Thank you guys . . . Tammie, I don't have both ends of the TC as of yet. I am still suffering from long lens syndrome . . . and just want more all the time. I understand that the TC's down grade the photo quality somewhat, but for me they seem to improve the shot. Forcing me to focus seems to help with both the shot and the crispness of the shot. This is an unexpected gift. The detail that I am getting from the use of the TC is just scaring me. The veins in the feathers of the duck above and the detail of the feathers in the 'Junko' little bird post from yesterday are both just killing me. Of course I think the color is good, especially compared to the 50-500 Sigma I was using prior. I may even try out a 2 x TC? It may work for me, who knows . . . or not, lol.

No noise that I can see, but the more uneven background would tend to hide any if it were there. Again, this is a wonderful shot.

Beautiful...the colours and clarity are stunning.
With such a lens combo, was the pic taken hand held or with a tripod.
Thanks

I wish I could claim that I was able to hand hold this . . . but I use a "Grip" Bogen ball head to track with on a tripod. The power of the lens, and the clarity seem to even make me look good . . . lol. I printed this out at 13x19 and it is just stunning. The veins in the feathers and the detail is just more than I ever thought possible. All I have to do is find a bird and hold still . . . the Canon does the rest.

I am thinking of a new printer and confused about which one to get. Which did you use to print your 13 x 19? I assume you are happy with it.

I have a new i9900 Canon . . . but the hot money here on POTN seems to be on the 2200? Espon. For me and where I am the Canon is fine, well even great. Large format and eight ink tanks . . . even makes some of our stuff look good.
