I received an inquiry to do business type portraits for an author who intends to use it on the back of her books. I've never done anything like that before and just wonder what things I might want to look out for. For instance, should I request a photo credit if she uses them on a book for print? If so, how much would you charge (since the session would be a piece of cake, would you charge a bit more since they would be using the image for mass production?). Any input would be appreciated!
Thanks!!

You absolutely have to charge a licensing fee and have a usage contract. Does he already have a book deal? What is the first estimated print run for the book? You just need to find out some things about the book. If he got a good book deal by a publisher and got say $40k for the book then you should be asking for a decent fee but if he is self publishing then you will have to ask for much less for him to afford it.

A publisher wants to use your work for the backs of her books (as in multiple books).. that is sweet.
Set your licensing fee based upon projected publication volumes; subject to adjustment if the books go into multiple printings, as well as getting a photo credit on each copy. The more usage, the higher the per copy fee or percentage royalty..
This gets your name published and bank deposits larger.

Thanks for the replies. I am going to contact her today for more info on how much she is printing. She stated she has an agent so I assume she's got stuff in the works...ya know? I am super excited about this opportunity, but also want to cover my butt!!

I have a book listed on my blog www.photobizstartup.com that has legal forms for photographers in it. It has pretty good licensing forms you can put together for your clients.
