Saw this on ebay. Some people will do anything to screw others.
ebay link (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=43454&item=3873593761&rd=1)
There was a thread a few days ago about the legality (or at the very least, the ethical aspect) of the firmware hack concerning the distribution of modified software.
Since this guy is distributing this info for monitary gain, I think this, at the very least croses the ethical line, if not the legal line. What do you think ?

I've heard of that before, people trying to sell the 300D hack for money on e-bay.
Ofcourse it's stupid, and maybe some fool will fall for it. I don't know anything about legal issues, so I can't say if it's legal or not. It might be illegal because the person who programmed the hack in principle has the copyright, and I don't know if (s)he has put any license on it. It's also not clear if the hack itself is legal. Often with software products the license agreement states that it's illegal to reverse engineer the software - I don't know if that's also the case with the 300D's firmware. If so, the programmer of the hack did at least something illegal to be able to create the hack. Anyway, I'm sure Canon is not happy about the hack, because it influences the sales of their cameras.

I don't think that guy is going to get busted for anything, but he is just preying upon a few stupid people who will buy anything on eBay. Nobody is going to get too worked up over that small amount of money.

I agree, he won't be busted. It just burns me to see this kind of activity.
If you look at his other items (Windows boot disks, anyone can make a boot disk from their own computer) I just hate people who try to profit off other peoples ignorance.
Its like the guy who was auctioning a 300D on ebay. Turns out, if you read the fine print at the bottom of the page, he was auctioning a web address that you could go to to win a 300D. I wonder how many people got stung on that one. ( Sorry, just ranting :) )

There once were also people that sold original 300D packaging... of course without a 300D inside. (In fact they never stated that a 300D was inside...)
People bid at high prices...

Maybe their PC is knackered and cannot boot up, how do you create a boot disc then? Maybe some people need to purchase one.
Some people may not be as clued up and frequent forums such as this and are not aware the firmware hack is freely available to anyone.
At the end of the day if the buyer feels they are getting value for money then that is all that matters surely.
I personally feel they are being robbed but then i know better, i am sure that in the past some people will think i was stupid to buy somethings that i have but hell i am happy, so there!

hmmm... if their pc won't boot up, how do they get on ebay?
ok, they could use the pc of a friend, but on this pc you can also generate boot-disks...
and most of the time you can boot from the original installation CDs.

Ok example:
My friend has an old PC that won't boot from CD and has no original disks as he bought it second hand and it didn't come with any.
He comes and browses Ebay on my Mac Powerbook that cannot create a windows boot disk, nor can i just download one as my powerbook does not have an outdated floppy drive to save one to.
What now?
My post was just pointing out that whilst you and i believe the buyer was robbed as long as they are happy with their purchase then great!

yes. that's one of the cases where this offer on ebay could be worth the money.
Here's a link for the Windows users out there : http://www.bootdisk.com/

I am constantly amazed that anybody buys anything on e-bay anymore. As a musical instrument repairman I am constantly amazed when people bring their e-bay "bargains" to me because they need to be repaired immediately on receipt, and these people feel they got great bargains for their children to learn on. I feel sorry for their children -- I wonder if they buy their medical advice on e-bay, too! Even when repaired as best they can be, at best they have paid no less than they would have at a local music store, and at worst they'll be back in a month or so because they got taken in their bargain hunting.
I haven't seriously looked to buy anything on e-bay for years because of all the dishonest people who sell stuff there.
I certainly wouldn't buy anything related to photography on e-bay! I only buy from trusted sources, even if I have to pay more. What's the bargain in buying a $400 lens for $200 if when you really want to use it, it doesn't work very well?
I just saw this in a thread on tripods on another forum: "Buy cheap and you'll buy twice!"
I like that!

Whatever you might think of the seller and/or ebay in general he is making money out of that hack. I counted 6 feedbacks that referred to the rebel before I got bored and there are surely many more in there.
