They just released the new Macbook Pros.
And guess what...you can't choose matt displays anymore.
What on earth were they thinking?

Only 13.3" displays as well... I can't live with less than 17" with 1920px hi-res glory...

Meh. Who uses the built-in display of any laptop for critical photo work? The real pisser, IMO, is that the new 24" external display is glossy only. Looks like Apple is either giving up on matte, or they're saving it for MWSF in January.

Well. What do we think about the 24 inch LED display for the macbooks?

You mean only 15" displays for the MB Pro. The 17" still exists, but not in the refresh.
My main complaint about the MB is the lack of Firewire.

No FW is silly.
13.3" would have been nice to replace my 12" PB G4. Ah well...

From engaget live coverage:
10:57AM Q: What's up with the 17-inch?
A: Tim: It's being refreshed today as well.
11:01AM Q: Concern about the glossy screens. Are you going to offer another option?
A: Steve: We're going all glass -- we won't offer another version. Phil: You offset the reflection by the brightness, and consumers love it. One of the great things about a notebook is you can turn it however you want!
11:03AM Q: You've put a lot of work into the new touchpad, do touchscreens not make sense?
A: Steve: so far it hasn't made a lot of sense to us.
Technically now there is a 13", 15", and 17" macbookpro. Although the screen thing still sucks. And come on, no tablet mac STILL.

This:
and consumers love it
Sums it all up.
Apple are going after the main stream consumer, and it is well proven that consumers like shiney things.

I'm just going to slap on a anti-glare sticker on the glossy screen. Works great!

So whats the difference in performance between the 15in pro and the 13.3in...I would much rather the smaller 13.3 in with an external monitor than the 15in

If you keep the window behind the screen you will not have any glare problems. I have three windows in my office and no glare problems.

Looks like you can still get matte:
http://www.macworld.com/article/136057/2008/10/applelaptopevent.html?lsrc=top_1
...While Apple focused on those two 15-inch models, the company also updated the $2,799 17-inch MacBook Pro. It now comes with a 1,920-by-1,200-pixel screen in either glossy or matte form. Processor speeds remain at 2.5GHz (though you can upgrade to 2.6GHz), while memory has increased to 4GB and storage capacity now reaches 320GB.

why are so many against the glossy screen in general? and i dont just mean the new MBP (although they look VERYVERY glarey)
ive got a the current revision of MBP in glossy and i NEVER see any reflections or glare, even if i look for it!
if your just meaning for the new MBP's then nevermind, because from what ive seen from pictures on the net - reflections are crazy, but then again thats under exhibition lighting!!!
im very much considering the new 24" screen to go alongside my MBP - seriously love the magsafe connector to!!!! GREAT TOUCH!

CS4 requires only 16bit Video card as minimum requirements.
LR2 doesn't state minimum video card requirements, but I find it is more hungry for processing/ram power than CS3, but I have updated 2.1 beta and is running much faster now.
I have a 2yr old 256 NVIDIA GeForce 7600GT on my iMac and have no problems.

Are there any advantages to having a glossy screen over a matte one?

I think the 15 inch has 2 graphics cards, one for performance the other for battery performance, which is also quick and is the same as the 13.3" Apparently to switch form one to the other you have to restart the computer.

the 13 in only has the one graphic card but it isn't 256k or 512k like the pros do...

i might be wrong but ive heard (from multiple sources) that you only have to log off in order for the switch to happen!

the 13 has a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256MB which is shared with the system
the 15 2.4ghz model has the same as above, whilst the 2.53/2.8 has a 9600GT with 512MB dedicated as well as the 9400m! well thats how ive understood it anyways!
edit- copy from apple site for the 15" macbook pro:
Graphics and video support
* NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics processor with dual-link DVI support; 256MB of GDDR3 memory on 2.4GHz configuration; 512MB of GDDR3 memory on 2.53GHz and 2.8GHz configurations
* NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics processor with 256MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory3
* Dual display and video mirroring: Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors

The 9400M is not a true "graphics card" it is a chipset and GPU on one chip. It certainly performs a lot better than the intel integrated graphics, and will probably be better on battery life then the 9600, but still is not as powerful as the real deal. That said in theory even if you get a MBP with the 9600M GT, it probably uses the same motherboard, and still has the 9400 in it. Being able to use it when you want to save battery life would be a great feature.

so has anyone tested the new macbooks?
I WANT ONE!!!!!
So i think the best thing about that is the dual gpu (if im reading it right) and the multi touch trackpad!
it has an nvidia 9400m as well as an nvidia 9600 gt!
If anybody wants to help me get one i would be so grateful :)
Until then, i'll keep on dreaming :(

I think the prices are just too high. They need to get a 12" MBP under $1000.

I have a MBP that is approaching 2 years old. I went to the Apple Store tonight with every intention of buying one. The glossy screen and only one firewire port were deal breakers for me. I will wait until a true pro level MBP comes out.

yea... thats what i meant about the mbp... i think the only reason i would go pro is cause of the graphics card... pretty much everything else will not make a huge difference... besides screen size

yea its got 2 gfx cards but dont run at the same time like SLI systems! never the less still a sweet card! multitouch was on the previous gen too, just without the 4 finger gesture!
i was thinking of trading mine in for the newer one, but apart from the gfx card mines just as good! now if there was bluray too then it would be a different matter!!!
by the way, with the glass touch pad, anyone think of what direction they might be going? (think iphone screen touch pad maybe?) that would be sweet :D

It's really not a deal breaker for me. It's connected to an external monitor 90% of time for me, and when it's not I can just move away from the glare.

saw them in the shop today! gotta admit they do look very slick! the previous generation look very dated in comparison... BUT saying that i would choose mine over the new ones ANY day!!!
i love my glossy screen and would never go matt again, but the new ones are just stupid! its just waaaay to reflective
as for the touch pad, i dont really like the feel of the whole pad clicking! especially when you click and drag - its a pain in the ass having to keep the pressure on the pad/button all the time!!! i mean i tend to hold the button with the other hand or a different finger when click-dragging - you just cant do that with the new one, otherwise your multitouching GRRRR
IMO for the macbooks, its a GREAT improvment, but it just doesnt cut it for the MBP's!
oh AND the battery holds less charge then the previous gen which sucks!
