Hi - what's a good tripod for a 1D mkiii? paired with, say a max weight of a 70-200 2.8 IS?

I need to get a decent tripod and since girlfriend is asking me what i want for xmas, i might as well get a new tripod.

no more than £150-£200 please and with head as well...

thanks all

i was looking at the manfrotto 190cx 4 stage legs recently, but its £200 no head.
maybe a velbon 645 (£150) plus a head (£50)...that could work

I am very happy with my 488rc and 190xb combo I got somewhere. It's small and easy to set up. The ball heads are much easier for me.

055PROb legs and a 488RC2 head, I don't know what the price is there, but it's $300 here

seems like the 488 head is a popular choice?!

it is rated to hold a significant amount of weight

^^ thanks but wouldn't the overall weight be up to the tripod? i'm not sure what the overall weight of the 1d and 70-200 is...
but i'll defo get the 488....

The tripod's ability to hold weight is also important, but the head must be able to hold the weight in position as well.

i'd say it's very hard to beat for the price.

It depends what type of photography you will be doing as far as the head. The 488rc2 (I just got one) is fairly useless for precise framing without a lot of trial and error. Even with a Tamron 28-75 on a 40D, there is often enough camera "droop" once you tighten it down and let the camera go, that I have to do it all over again (aim higher than I want and let the framing settle down). With the 70-200 f4 IS, the effect is quite bad at 200mm. Personally, I can't recommend the 488 but, for the price, I doubt there is anything better out there.

I may replace with the Manfrotto geared head which is what I was originally thinking of buying.

do it right the first time, go with a good head, i personally went with the arca swiss z1 and have no regrets...

I will retract my previous post, to state that the framing problem is in the pan lock and not the ball.

When you tighten down the pan lock, the head rises, when you loosen it, the head drops. Just means that the pan lock should not be that last adjustment you make if critical framing is important.

I am looking at this same set up for my 1D Mk II/70-200 f4 IS.

After seeing/using a Markins ballhead, I would be quick to avert any attention from my 488 series ballhead. I can't justify spending that much money on a ballhead, but you're shooting with a mark III... =)

I'd say gitzo carbon legs and a markins head.. Don't bother buying a cheap(er) model first because you will eventually see the need to upgrade.

Remember, pick two: Strong, Light, Inexpensive.
