Spied this wonderful little jack rabbit in the brier a week or two ago. He pretended to not see me, so I returned the favor. As we neared him, you could hear his foot, 'thump' against the ground . . . over and over again. A cute sound from a lovely animal. He had best pay attention however, for eagles and such prey on them from above and the coyotes, bobcats and such from below.

I laughed at the brush he had kept near for his escape . . . and thought of the children's story of the rabbit in the brier.

RJ,
I think what you've shot here is a cottontail, not a jack, though I could be wrong due to the angle, however jack's have significantly longer ears. Great catch either way though!

P.S. We've got hundreds of Jackrabbits around here. I'll see if I can get a shot of one today.

LOL . . . ok. I await your photo and verification of same. I have to say that to 'us' rabbits are rabbits and little birds are just that, "Little Birds." It is only here on POTN that I suppose one needs to know the correct taxidermy of each of the species. Its all good.

I even got a bird book . . . but I won't get a rabbit one, lol. Thanks for the help and the correction. I think it good that the captions be correct.

If it is a good photo, then it is a good photo and that is sufficient.

On the other hand, if you intend to sell the photo print, then it is more important to have the correct animal name attached. Some people use only the common name, which is fine. Some use the Latin/scientific name also, and that is fine. Sometimes I'll search a photo database with only the Latin name.

Most jack rabbits are taller and a little gangly. Cottontails tend to be fatter and cuddly, probably shorter ears, and tastier in the stew pot. Jacks can be 24" ear-to-tail. Cottontails are more like 14".

Cottontail or Jackrabbit, it is a fine picture.

It's a good thing you kept your silence and distance. They're man-eaters! Haven't you ever seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail?

RJ,
I apologize for my seemingly unthoughful remarks about your photo. Please believe me when I say it was all meant to be lighthearted. I guess I'm just one of those people who likes to know what he's dealing with (must be the cop in me!). As I said in my initial response, that was a great catch, especially with him hiding next to his getaway route through the briars.

As for a shot of a jack, I drove all over base, and of course, not one jackrabbit to be found. If I wasn't looking for them, they'd be everywhere as usual. I did have one little cottontail pose for me though.

Again, I'm very sorry if I seemed to be criticizing you. It wasn't meant that way!

AFC . . . LOL, you are just fine. No problem at all, it is a fair & valid point and I guess I should and or need to pay more attention to this. Or just say rabbit, lol. I never paid much attention to the smaller critters and so always just say what I see most. I do think you are right however. As to them being vicious killers . . . I had forgotten all about that. Run away . . . run away! Since I have gotten a little older and no longer hunt, I seem to be softening up on the finer points of life and even the small creatures. Each beautiful in its own intriguing way.

Thanks one and all for the kind words on Mr. Peter Cottontail . . .

RJ,
I took this picture awhile back and told my hubby, "Look at the cute bunny that was on the golf course". He informed me that it was a jack rabbit not a bunny.

LOL, yep he is all Jack . . . what I see most. I need to look better before I post . . . lol. <hangs head in shame and asks forgivness> I'll get it ALL right yet. After all I started out shooting the back side of birds . . .

Edit:

Ok here is the real deal . . . Tammie you have there a Lepus alleni, I thought mine was a Lepus californicus . . . but it is most likely a Sylvilagus andubonii better known as the Desert Cottontail.
