One of the local high schools that I shoot for for football will be having their last game at their field before it will be completely re-did. The stadium is somewhat of an icon. They want me to get in a small plane and take a picture right before gametime which will be at 7pm on Oct 31. I've never taken a shot like this and am in need of some info. The field is terribly lit anyway. Any thoughts?????

How high up are you going to be? Fast lens is going to be absolutely essential (moving plane + slow lens = disaster)...

First of all make sure you go with a pilot experienced in doing aerial photograhy and remember safety first. You will be at a minimum of 1000' above the ground and like others said use a fast lens. I would recommend finding the pilot and getting together and briefing on what you are trying to accomplish and then go try and shoot it in daylight prior to going at night so you can get a feel of what to expect and how cramped it can be shooting in a little airplane. Good luck and have fun.

You want something with a high wing & the ability to shoot without a closed window. You will be at a minimum of 1000' You can shoot at f/2.8 & won't have to worry about DOF.
Since it's the last game & you won't be shooting it, make sure that you charge enough to make up for the lost pic sales. ;)

Hey, while Im thinking about it, what lens?? I guess Im leaving my 70-200l 2.8 in the case, but what one?
24-70l 2.8
or 1.8 85???
both?? or another lens
like I said, the field is a dungeon

Depending on what you will be flying in you should have room for both lenses. If you have two bodies I'd bring both set ups all attached so that you are noth trying to switch lenses in the airplane in the dark. If you had to choose one though I might be tempted to take the 1.8 85 over the 70-200.

Depends on the altitude? I might start with the 24-70 to see what framing I can get with the wings/struts & end up with tighter 70-200 shots.

na, Im bringing two bodeis but I didnt know about the 70-200 or not, but I guess you are right, it depends on the altitude

I just did an aerial shot of a couple of lighthouses in early morning. It was my first and I have to say that using a 100mm f/2.8 prime turned out better images than my 24-105mm f/4. This was in a high-wing aircraft and I was in the left front seat with the window open. It was a bit chilly and you have to double and trip make sure of your hood (it will fly off if you stick a part of it out of the window)
I think the 70-200 will be way too long of a lens (not focal length). You can't sit in the front seat and lean far back enough so the head is inside of the plane without crushing the pilot.
