Your opinions requested please. I've watched the PMA announcements and haven't heard even a whisper about a succcessor to the G6. Anyone heard anything or have any thoughts/guesses?
Second, I have the G3 and really like it but am considering purchasing the G6, assuming there won't be a G6 successor anytime soon - say next 3 to 6 months. Primarily I would prefer the extra pixels to be able to crop some of my photos and still have a nice printed photo up to at least 8X10. Unreasonable expectation? Anything I'm forgetting to take into consideration? I know, some of you wonder why not the Pro 1, new EOS 350D/DReb XT, etc. Honestly, as good as the DReb XT sounds, I simply cannot handle a camera that large plus the lenses and etc.
Sooo, G6 and other owners, what do you think? Wait to see if there is a successor to the G6. Pros and cons of moving from the G3 to the G6? What are your opinionated opinions? :) Thanks ...
Gil

That's a tough call right now. G6's can be had for $497 (beachcamera.com), but who knows what the prices will do if no successor is named at the PMA show. I imagine the price will go back up slightly.
I have a G6 and I really like it. If you are concerned about a new model possibly being unveiled at the PMA show, why don't you just wait it out another week and see what happens... Canon usually announces new models at the PMA show and then later in the year around Sept./Oct.
BTW, I've owned a G3 and a G5 in addition to my new G6 and I like the G6 much better than the older models.

I don't think a G3 to G6 is that great of an upgrade. The G6 has a max image size of 3072 x 2304 and the G3 has 2272 x 1704. You are gaining 35% on the vertical and horizontal image size, which will let you crop a bit, but maybe not as much as you think.
The G6 has a little snappier focus and actually I would say would be my pick over a Pro-1 because of the better noise control.
I have a G3 and I am waiting for the successor of the G6 to come around. Either that or I'll just get a DreXT.

The G6 hasn't been out long enough to get a real deal on it. I waited until the G3s were really scarce, and then I started checking store web sites. Good luck. I like the G6 too, but I never go bigger than 8x10, and a G3 has no problem with that.

I upgraded from the G3 to the Pro-1. I had bad luck with the Pro-1's focusing and got rid of it as soon as the G6 came out. I like the G6 over the Pro-1 (not a popular opinion I'm sure), but I don't think I could recommend the G6 over the G3 until your G3 dies.
3 camera's in 2 years? I'm think I've learned the painful lesson of being impulsive! heh heh. I'm not with anything else, but these little digital cameras keep me awake at night...don't fall for it! (I think there's subliminal messages in PMA coverage!)

darn ... y'all make it difficult to justify upgrading to the G6 :) :) :)

The G3 and G6 have the same lens, but the G6 has improved lens coating to help prevent fringing. That would be enough reason for some folks! The G6 has a bayonet (body end) lens adapter as opposed to screw mounted. Very fast changes between adapters, if you have more than one.

One thing I forgot to mention about the G6 vs G3/G5 is the ergonomics. I have fairly large hands and the handgrip on the G6 fits me very well. The G3/G5 felt clumsy and awkward in my hands compared to the G6. Since I sold my G5 at a very good price (for me ;) ), the ergonomic comfort of the G6 was worth the upgrade to me.
Let's not forget that the G6 has a 3MP larger sensor than the G3. The ability to heavily crop an image and still have enough pixels to make nice 8x10 prints comes in very handy. I believe you mentioned this in your original post also.
Canon also did away with the internal battery charger on the G6. I never used that anyway on my G3/G5. If you have your camera plugged in to charge your battery, you can't use your camera. How much sense does that make to have a feature like that? To me, doing away with that feature is just one more thing that "can't go wrong" with my $500 + camera.
The real question is: Do you really need a new camera, or are you just jones'ing for something different?
