Walmart has fog machines in for $25 cdn these days. The chemical is $10 more.
Other than at Halloween, they are fairly expensive. If your in the market, now is the time to get one.
I remember reading about someone wanting one here a while back.

WARNING: Be sure the smoke chemical is NOT oil based...very clingy and will get all over stuff you don't want it all over...!!!

Also make sure it can be used for indoor. I've done my research in past years and those Halloween fog machines are NOT for indoor use. They state they are for outdoor use only. Possibly it is the smoke compound based on oil.

The unit and fog solution states "produces a safe, thick, spooky fog, water-based fog"
The ingredients on the solution are water and glycerin.

Is the use of fog machines getting a little 'cliche' in glamour photography lately? i have one but because the fog is so hard to control, i struggle to get the effect i'm looking for...

I saw a fog machine in Target, today for $19 and the juice for $5. Not sure if it's oil or water based though. Think I will pick one up.

I tried to pick one up from Walmart this evening. Sadly, they were sold out. Being so close to Halloween, I doubt they restock.

Buy them when they are on clearance (like right now). I bought one to use for shooting but have forgotten all about it. I should dig it out and play around with it a bit...
Someone mentioned (in this thread) that it is hard to control the fog while shooting. The trick is a "cool" box. Basically you set the machine up so it's close to the shoot etc. Then you use a cheap foam cooler to make the cool box. The cooler has a bunch of tubing coiled up inside of it with lots of ice on top of it. You then run smoke from the machine through the tubing (figure out how to hook them up) and when it comes out of the cool box the smoke will hang close to the ground giving you a layer of fog that looks really cool. A model can then gently kick the fog to get a lifting effect.

Not connected with this company but I am a satisfied customer of one of their products. The tronix Explorer XT. They have a battery powered portable
smoke machine as well . They call it the Tronix Vulcan. It may help you. I think they are going to exhibit in in Las Vegas in the WPPI show this February.

Party supply stores are a good place to get them too.
I just picked mine up a few days ago.
The machine was $25 and the solution was $15 for a gallon.
Now I've got to put it to use.
Aside from glamour, I'm looking forward to using it for 'rugged or tough' looking sports portraits.

A lot of guys use them for scale diorama shoots. The chilled fog stays low and gives a great effect.

Carefully controlling fog can be very difficult, and eliminating the haze it leaves behind is equally challenging.
The previously linked image is a great example of using the haze to effect even it it's not the 'fog' as such.

i got one a while back...tried it for a shoot, but should have practiced it first. The smoke filled the immediate area in the warehouse and gave the images a dull cloudly look. Not what i was going for. lol. but i played with it and manage to somewhat get what I wanted...but need more practice.
I also got a bubble machine...but it doesn't give off enough bubbles at a time to warrant the effect i wanted. but hey! now i got both for parties.. I'm an impulse buyer though...
