I use the S40 and a few of my close up shots have been totally washed out by white....
any quick way to reduce the amount of flash...my manual was not included from who I bought it from...used...

Yes, you can reduce the flash output. On the left hand side of the LCD display, you'll find 3 buttons arranged vertically. Press the top most button (the one with wb wording) 4 times. It will changed from exposure compensation, white balance, aeb, and finally flash output power.
If you used standard flash power, you should stand at least 3 meter away from the subject, else they'll become white. If the object is 5 meter away, you can adjust the power to maximum.

you can't be in auto mode to adjust the flash. i always use P mode but i think any of the manual modes will do.

When I tried this feature, I had to move it to the + side to REDUCE the intensity of the flash; moving it to the - side made the image even more overexposed. Either way didn't make a huge difference though.
Is that correct or did I do something wrong?
