So, you want somthing that starts around 17 mm, skips the 40-85mm range and picks up again around 135 mm, right. That's tough. How about the 24-85 3.5-4.5

Nahh, you need that 40-85 range for wildflowers.

If I could have only one lens for nature, it would be my Canon 28-135 I.S.

I was going to say that one bob, because I figured it would be the best all around lens, but Trevor said within 300 bucks, so I said the 24-85

The 28-135 IS is a great walk around lens. It's about $400 at B&H photo. I find it to be a nice range for general shots. I keep it on the camera in my kit. If I could only afford one lens, I would save up for this one.

Yes. I have had some good success, especially outside, with the 28-135. I can't think of another lens that would meet your criteria and make you really happy, especially not at that price point.

While you are at it, get the 50mm 1.8 since its so cheap and it will give you some low-light capabilities that the 28-135 doesn't have.

Get another battery too because the IS might drain some power.

Oh, and the petal-type lens hood for the 28-135 is really cool but it costs more.

Oops, I just spent way too much money. Sorry.
