Some of these still need a bit of tweaking, they're straight out of Photomatix (I usually like to do some sharpening and contrast adjustments etc in Photoshop).

Those are great. The train yard shots, and engine shot are fantastic photos, and the processing gives them a painting look that really works well.
I assume most of these are from a single RAW, since I don't see ghosting around the people?
I've gotta get better with PM, mine never look that good. I always have to make several adjustments in CS3.
edit: Doh. I just re-read the title, single RAW :)

They're all from single RAW files, although I do occasionally blend multiple exposures.
I really hate seeing halos in these types of files so I back off as soon as they begin to become noticeable.
I've never been a fan of overly processed HDR-type images so I'm pushing myself to see how far I can go without making the images look too surreal and ghastly.

Do they have any decent flats for rent?

Unfortunately not. The whole place is a working museum, frozen in time from about a hundred years ago.

A wonderful series Jo. Can you tell me the process you use, just in general? You start with one RAW, but do you import it to Photomatix or do you make three tiffs with different exposure values and import those?

Excellent series. #2 and #6 (though the horizon line is a bit off) are my top picks.

For these I just dropped a single RAW file into Photomatix. I have experimented in the past with generating several jpegs at different exposures from the one RAW file but that's quite time consuming and I'm generally in too much of a rush. I am going to have a try at doing the blending myself in Photoshop soon as the various HDR converters don't always give me the amount of control I'd like.
When I'm taking the shots, in the back of my mind I'm trying to expose with pseudo-HDR in mind, so I'm careful not to clip the highlights too much and not to introduce too much noise. Some files just flat out don't work as tonemapped HDR files, but when you find some that do work it's satisfying.

Well, I am liking the pseudo HDR more and more. Real HDR doesn't do greens well, and with starting from a single file, you can't beat the alignment.

Those are awesome photos and it seems you backed off at just the right point in the processing.
