My buddy was actually using them earlier today, he loves them. They work really well with portrait shoots.
Good luck with it,

Luis, take a look at these units: http://www.alienbees.com
They are a little more expensive, but there is much more available in the way of accessories and I have always had great customer support from the company.

I have three SP 3200's. I'm very happy with them. I got the large soft box, barn doors and beauty disc to go along with the umbrellas.

They are pretty nice unit for their price. And the f-stop is pretty good, since its not click-stop. The built quality is, well....plastic. Because of that its fairly light. Photoflex makes a speed-ring adaptor for their lights, so you can use any of their products. I am sure there are other manufacture that does too.
I have tested these lights with the ST-E2 and they are compatible with it. You do have to manually tape down the 4 contacts on the hot shoe.

I don't have much to add to the other thread. If the 580EX is in Manual Mode, there shouldn't be any preflash, unless you are using Wireless Manual, in which case there will be a preflash to control what it thinks are other EX series flashes. That will trigger the SP lights before the shutter opens.

You're asking for a lighting textbook :D Take a look at www.lightingmagic.com . Scott Smith sells an excellent book on studio lighting and has alot of useful information posted on his site.
