View Full Version : Where is technology taking us in the next ten years?

In ten years will sensor technology have advanced (100 mega pixels??) to the point that there will no longer be a need for anything other than a FF camera? Will we just crop the full frame picture to what we want and then size it? Or will there be other developments, like a 2.0 crop factor that we will find interesting uses for?

Just plug the chip into the slot in the back of your neck, compose with your eyes, (the ultimate in "Live View") and blink.
That'll save the image on the chip. :p

Shoe camera, that way all your pictures can stink but you have an excuse for why! ;)

Custom built to specification and upgradeable.
Similar to ordering a PC from Dell.

Seriously, beyond a certain point, more pixels is pointless consumption of digital storage space (harddrive) because of optical limitations imposed by the lenses. So I think that higher dynamic range is the next place to venture. I also think that the digital world is horribly behind the times in terms of having NOTHING to show images at large size with high resolution...the best HDTV has a paltry 1900x1000 display but our digital originals have 4500x3000 resolution. No one can SHOW OFF their images with the same emotional impact as we film shooters could show our Velvia slides on projection screens!

I've read about large-size "digital displays" that were incorporated into an exhibition in New York not too long ago. Interestingly, these weren't LCD displays and were used outside and getting some kind of ambient light response to give a non-electronic "feel", but I haven't heard anything more about it and there wasn't any technical explanation in the article I read. I imagine, as well, that they are quite spendy. Even a little 8x10 digital display is pretty spendy.
The flexible plastic LCDs are an interesting possibility. I've seen demos that are pretty large, but it seems that the ones I've seen are transparent, which would cut way down on their useability.
Resolution aside, I actually get a positive response when I show shots on my big screen TV, assuming they are high-impact shots, and its only an old 720p plasma, but it's 50", so it does have its own "Wow" factor.

But just imagine if it was shown at full res on a 5'x8' screen!
I have seen the difference of projecting medium format slides, projected on the same screen size as 35mm slides, and it literally takes away the audience members' breath away!

It depends. Now things are still quite same no matter what part of photography you are looking at. Ok there's minor differences between studio and news, but in general 1d and 1ds are quite similar cameras. In future things will go much further apart for sure. So in general, I have feeling we won't be seeing MP race for much longer.
I was just writing about this on my blog (http://blog.photo.si/2008/10/17/future-of-photography/) last time. It's not so much about technology but more about pj business, but still... it also concerns technology too. Now I'm not telling I know anything. I don't have any info from Canon or Nikon, just my personal opinion and some use of logic... which might be completely off :) We will all see in next few years :)

If we don't get the Canon 0D (http://www.astropix.com/wp/2007/04/01/cannon-0d-zero-d-dslr/) (and associated lenses) I will be very, very upset.
And when I get upset, people get, uh, ok, nobody pays attention :(
