Hi I was wondering what you thought, met him today while I was out walking in the rain. Cropped a bit tight at the nose I think.

I agree with you on the crop. And you've also centered him in the frame, which may not be the best for this subject.

Thanks for the input, this is me getting my rule of thirds all wrong will try another crop of the original and see how that looks when I have time, Thanks.

so...do you think this is in focus or not that has been my real struggle comments welcome.

i think the DoF is a bit too shallow. F1.7 is bit much. I'd drop it down to maybe 2.8 to get more focus, and you want to try to make sure to focus on the eyes. The horse's face is too centered. i would crop it with his head more to the left third of the picture.
