Is that the DC version (decaf) or regular version of the lens?
You get more image shake from the caffeine effect...............

How fast can you pour? With the top off, it is very fast.

Yes. That stands for Demitasse Optics, and it is considerably smaller.
It should also be noted that filters for this lens are available from Molita and Mr. Coffee.

A little secret about blue rubber bands - they are usually found in the fresh vegetable section of the grocery - wrapped around broccoli or celery. Or, in my case, wrapped around my old Rollei flash to keep the battery cover intact.
But don't tell anybody....

No, I'm afraid the red ring is a little Photoshop deception. Actually, it's actually white. I also have the stainless steel version of the same mug, and it has a yellow ring.

There has been an evolution, and it looks like 'anything' is possible - While in the office supply store I got a pack of clear address labels which, with a little photoshop, will allow the addition of the control switches for any 'L' lens to this new hardware platform. Initial development will be done with configurations that are immediately available to me (70-200 f4L and 400 f5.6L). As soon as an IS model becomes available I will be able to mock up a prototype of it.

Okay, CoolToolGuy sent me photos of his lens. You will notice that his is the Mk II version of the Starbucks Lens. The differences are obvious compared to my very crude device as depicted in the beginning of this thread.

And here are some comments from CoolToolGuy on how the Mk II was improved over the original release.
Tom,
Here you go. As I said, I did the photo of the switches quickly, so please excuse the quality. I may hack at it some more.
The stripe looks better with extra 'coats' of Sharpie. So far I've given it 2.
If you want to print the switch plate on the labels, look for Avery #8660 or equivalent. The switch plate image is sized for it. I got them at Staples in a Trial size pack (10 sheets), which is cheaper than the normal size.
CoolToolGuy
28th of February 2005 (Mon), 10:50
And here are some comments from CoolToolGuy on how the Mk II was improved over the original release.
The next update: I wanted to use it in the car today, so last night I decided to wash the mug. I was not worried about the labels as they are plastic. But I had my brain disconnected about using an inkjet printer - the label was in fine condition, just blank. DOH! :o I'll have to print off another one. I want to hack at it some more, and find a laser printer for a more permanent solution.
Usage Review: All in all, as a commuter mug this is best described using the immortal word of CDS - 'poop'. The diameter of the bottom section is just about too large for the cupholder in my Montana. I made it fit, but its a tight squeeze. It drips from the drink hole if you're not careful, and its not dishwasher safe. The Starbucks retail is over $20, but they had it 'marked down' to $9.99. However, considering that I now have an 'L' mug (and you can, too with a Sharpie), I'll keep it.
Have Fun,
lkorell

Just a quick comment on photo manipulation.
I highly recommend taking the picture of the original lens (that which will be used for the label) from the same position as the final shot will be taken. The reason is so the shadows all go in the same direction giving it a better 3D effect, it will make it harder to catch the manipulation.
Yes, I know this is just a for the fun of it, but you should always spend more effort on those so they can be appreciated more. Shadows are the first indicator I would look for as an imagery analyst. For trivia, scale is usually the second indicator that people mess up on, then blending two images.
Just trying to be helpful.

Thanks - originally I had the lens set up with a lamp on either side, shining on each side of the barrel. That yielded two reflective points that were virtually impossible to remove - I could move them, but they were always there. Then I turned the lens 90 degrees, with one lamp at the objective end and one at the mount end. The washouts disappeared, and SNAP.
I really just wanted to see if I could get close with the 'clear' address labels, and if I could get it to work with the labels - margins & such, is the label really as clear on plastic as it is on paper, etc. I had to be a guest (read: pay the check) at my daughter's 18th birthday party and I only had a short time. I noticed the shadows, but I don't have a light tent or enough lights to make them go away. I also want to do a better color match or make the color from the 'real' L go away in the image to let the color of the mug come through the label. I used my 100 f2 with an extension tube, and I want to increase the DOF to get the whole curved switch plate in focus.
Thanks for the tips.

Thanks for the tip on these. I was headed out to Joshua Tree for a day trip and happened to see them marked down at the Starbucks in Yucca Valley. Only problem I had was a poor fit on the cap which resulted in several images leaking out and onto the floor boards of my car..... Who would have figured the images were actually stored in the lens and not the camera....

Have Fun,
You don't actually want the shadows to go away, that may make it look as unrealistic as shadows going in wrong direction.
What I would do if I had the mug is;
use an on camera external flash (in my case a 550EX) and set the camera in a fixed position (in Manual mode), then take a picture of the Lens, print the label, affix and take a picture of the mug in the same position as the lens was, without moving the camera (or better yet keeping the camera in the same relationship to the label). That way the shadows should look the same.
Matching the color that would be a bit trickier and would take some trial and error (or a touch of PS)
My problem is lack of the mug.
