black and white

At the absolute risk of sounding like a completly newbie..

Browsing through the image galleries, I see a lot of black and white. Personally I've always been fond of the contrast. Some images were just meant to be done in b/w. Ok so anyways, are the majority of those images shot in black and white film, and then scanned in? Or would they just be digital images converted to black and white with photoshop or psp? I really want to get into shooting more artistic and would like to do it properly from the start.

Either or. With the number of digital users in this forum its more likely digitals converted to b/w though.

As for shooting properly? You can do it any which way you like if the results are good.
