Does anybody know if it is possible to turn off the pre flash on the powershot a510?

Thanks,
Mark

I recently got an A510. One of the first things I did was start using my sunpak 433 with a wein slave module.

I havn't had an issue with the preflash, but I put the camera in full manual. I think the preflash only works in P, Av, and Tv. Not sure though. Maybe someone with more experience can enlighten us.

Nice pic. Which slave module do you use (type)? I did a quick search and found that wein has slave modules (WEIN DIGITAL SMART SLAVES) which ignore the pre flash.

Thanks,
Mark

Not familiar with the "smart slave". Mine is an old one I had laying around. All it says on it is Wein and HS. I think HS stands for Hot shoe, cause it has both a hotshoe and a pc terminal.

Here found a link. Looks exactly like this except it has no "D". I suspect they are the exact same thing.

I think I paid about half that at a retail store too.

Edit: Since posted the above I played around some more with my equipment. I didn't try the other modes before because I wanted to control both the shutter and the aperature and let the thryster on the flash control exposure. The flash is a Sunpak 433D with a lumiquest pro bounce, and has always been accurate with the auto setting. I did get consistent results in Manual mode, but just now I tried program and Av and both of these modes came out overexposed. I put it back in M and put the shutter at 160 and the aperture at F8 and got a very nicely exposed shot. The flash set at ISO 100 seems to correspond well to ISO 50 on the camera.

Hope that helps.

Kevin

I think the preflash is linked to the red eye reduction, if you turn that off, it should turn off the preflash.
