Ahhh one of those nights were all the action goes opposite field or just too close for the big prime. Also the opposing QB, pictured below was very good at looking off the defense (me also) and a rocket arm so I didn't get one reception. Oh well, the few I did catch:

Last play of the night ended up in a sack of the losing QB who just laid there for 10 seconds.

Also a question. I'm still getting a little ambient bleed into some of my shots that already are pushing close to being blown out from the flash. Would decreasing ISO help this to get rid of some of the ambient?

Yeah. Lowering your ISO or raising your aperture will knock down ALL light (ambient and flash).

Dan, work to be proud of here. Once you stopped down, they looked even better. Nicely done.

Much better than mine. I love #3. It is the best one as you have no blurring.
May I ask what flash power & zoom settings? I was trying 550ex at 1/2 power and 70/80mm zoom.

Thanks Bobby. Most were 1/4+.07 @105mm. I did go to 1/2 power on some of the 420mm shots. I'm going to do some experimenting with zoom this fri.

Dan,
Solid action shots. I would for sure just stop down the F stop as that will help with a lot of the ghosting your getting. Your already at 800 ISO so noise is not an issue, just use F4 to F5.6 for tight shots to get super sharp images.
What is the ambient reading at that field? It has to be pretty darn good.

last shot must say it all for the game outcome.

Yeah I think it is kind of a "had to be there " shot, but I liked it. It was a great shoot out game with the score 47-34, which was the reason I was pretty disappointed in my shots from that game. All that scoring and I didn't end up with any good shots of them.
Matt I had it at F4 except for the first five minutes or so. I think the first photo is @2.8. Ambient is very good. Our home games are played in a JC stadium, ambient is 1600/400. Thanks guys for the comments.

Dan,
Yeah man that is really good ambient lol I would think you need an ISO of 400 and F4 to be over two stops right?

That is what I was thinking. Next home game is the home coming game in two weeks so I'll try it out. Dungeon this Fri.

From what another photog told us (dennis) I believe you should take a picture with out the flash on and the subjects in the picture should be dark , barely visible. You should then turn on the flash and adjust till the exposure is where you want it to me. Which should give you at least 3 stops

Funny I just read that on MP and was going to do it next game. Thanks Matt.

Do any of you get complaints from players/coaches for shooting flash close up?

At our local high schools there are multiple photogs using flash. Players don't even notice it.

Also these are shot from 100-150 ft away so the flash is hardly in there face.
