Hi All,
I'm looking for a hard case to accomodate 2 pro bodies and 4 lenses including the 100-44 and 70-200 (preferably with the hoods) and the misc stuff like flash, filters etc.
Any suggestions?

REI had/has the Pelican 6100 case on sale for about $50 off. Bought one for just the purpose you are looking for, although it's two 300D bodies, a 20D body ... aw heck, the list is mostly from my sig block, just look there and figure what fit in the case.

http://www.rei.com
then just search for pelican 1600
ran just over $150

thanks!
is there room in the 1600 for 3 more lenses?
I looked up the 1600 before, unfortunately they don;t show the interior laid out with the camera gear, so it's hard to visualize.
Maybe you can post a pic of yours :)
Also, the 1600 doesn't have an extending hanldle or wheels.
BTW, checkout http://www.pelican-case.com/ for the prices.
It would be nice if they had a "customize" or "recommendation" web tool where you could click on what you had to house, and they would recommend a case.
Any other ideas?
Thanks!

No idea on how many lenses it will hold. Been looking at Pelican cases for years, and finally when it was available at REI and I needed more secure storage ... it should be here on Tuesday

i've got the 1600 and it fits my 20d, G5, and two short and 2 long lenses. It all depends on how you cut the foam.

oh I was hoping to avoid having to this, but this is what I want to fit:
10G/grip (maybe 1dmkii one day :) I can dream can't i ??? )
20D/grip
70-200/hood
100-400/hood
16-34
24-70/hood
100mm
420EX
loose stuff like filters, CF cards etc
be nice to have room to spare. may want to get another short prime.

1600 sure looks good. and it's nice to hear your experiences. I'm just spacially challenged, can't envision if all that would fit well into a 1600. Would really appreciate seeing a pic of your setup .
Thanks!

I also keep my case loaded with silica gel because it's extremely moist here in Okinawa. This case is used for permanent camera storage and traveling, however when I am out and about shooting I have a little top loader lowepro bag.

thanks. although I searched canon for the modle lens you have listed and can't seem to find it :) :D
looks like the 1600 won't accomodate all the stuff I have listed. do you agree?

oh i'm sorry. that case is a 1500. I also have a case for my laptop which is a 1520. it is larger. it's about 2 inches wider and about 2-3 inches taller so you can get away with storing two cameras with the grips on them. what you need to do is lay all of your stuff out and space it properly. then measure it and make sure you leave room for the outside

thanks michael
on another note (and I don't mean to redirect this thread, because I'm still hoping for comments/suggestions on the case).... are there still any war relics on Okinawa? must have lots of interesting things to shoot.

Michael, did you get your pelican online or someplace on-island? I am looking for some permanent storage for my 300D and equipment. Thanks!

From my own experience here on Oki, there are tons of things to shoot, but I haven't been here that long, I am always deployed and getting sent someplace!

Mike, probably a dumb question, but how does the foam work? Do you cut it out yourself to custom fit stuff?

My buddy has a Pelican case and it's like already pre-scored in his case -- all you have to do is like, pluck it out from where you want the camera or the equipment. We did his in a few minutes. Plucked out the outline of the gear and then did the insides. I am looking into getting one, but I don't know where to go on Oki, or to get online. Waiting on a reply ;)

there are a wide variety of things to shoot here. I am still striving to get to the point where i can image the photo in my head... then use my camera to capture it just like that. still learning, have a long long way to go.

the foam is so easy, you just peel it out, it's pre-cut into these 1cm by 1cm pieces and you just tear the perforation

mine was under a hundred bucks and the foam just peels out. just decide which ones you need to pluck out. word of caution, mine is the 1500!

I've been looking for a hard case too for some of my larger glass. Pelican is great but I've also been looking at cases from these two.

I saw the storm case in a Wolf Camera in Dallas and it looked pretty darned good.

I'd stick with Pelican. :-)

The case I use for my camera is also the same case we use here at work (military) to ship our most fragile equipment to all corners of the globe.... I've seen some of the pelican cases we have here that are about 10 years old and have been SEVERELY used and thrown around. they have a lot of scuffs and cosmetic blemishes but the latches are still tight and they still have a good seal on them.

I understand you can now get Storm (at least, not sure about Pelican) with dividers instead of foam.

I.e. there is still foam in the lid and in the base but the main compartment is a big block of velcro'ed dividers that you can move about as you feel fit, much like the inside of a camera bag. Not sure if they offer as much protection as using foam but might make someones life easier if you need to change layout depending on what you are doing and what you need to take kit wise.

Cheers

Ian

Mike, probably a dumb question, but how does the foam work? Do you cut it out yourself to custom fit stuff?
No, the foam block is pre-cut in small square pieces, like an army of french fries ;)

What I did (instead of buying those expensive branded cases) was to buy cheaper aluminium cases in a DIY then the rather inexpensive "pick'n'pluck" foam blocks.
Take a look here (http://www.bogenimaging.us/product/itemlist.php3?manufid=16&sectionid=293) or there (http://www.telescope.com/jump.jsp?itemType=PRODUCT&itemID=135) or even there from where I bought mine (http://www.scopeoptics.com/Orion_Aluminum_Pluck_Foam_Case.html).

I got the 1510 as an XMas gift from the better half.

It fits everything that I currently have nice and sung.

That includes : 10D w/grip, 20D, 2 Tamron Lens, Sigma, 2 Canon Lens [not L], charger, batteries and cleaning kit. The lid has foam in it and behind the foam are all the receipts for proof of purchase for traveling internationally.

The case can be found here (http://www.pelican.com/cases/3bo_1510.html) on Pelican's website.
