I have a 20D right now and enjoy it alot but, I am thinking of trading it for a 1D...do you think this is a good move...or am I making the wrong move? Can anyone tell me what to do cause my wife doesn't like the 20D portrait shots that it takes inside. Outside she love the way it take pictures and comes out clean but, inside with the flash she hates it and think the quality is bad and I shoot with the canon 85 1.8 inside. I know it is usually the guy behind the camera and it could be me for sure. hahahahahaha

It sounds more like a flash issue - flash is harsher light, and harder to tame. I don't think that switching to a 1D will resolve that issue.

Spend your money on lighting equipment, that is where you will notice a difference.

Keep the 20D and change the light bulbs.

sounds like you are going in the wrong direction. The problem isn't the 20D, it's the light. Post some of your shots on the portrait section, and people will give you idea how to improve it.

Other bodies MIGHT give better from-the-camera flash pics-- but what everyone is saying so far about working out the flash issues will give the greatest improvement

You may want to try the Lumiquest bouncers and such - Get the pro kit. Its cheap, attaches with velcro, and offers a variety of flash options. I've been getting good results with the 80/20 setup lately. It allows 80% of the light through to bounce off the ceiling, while 20% is directed to the subject to provide catchlight and lessen shadows.

Here's a picture of it on my 550EX:

The 1D is faster for sports, but that is not your problem, so don't trade it in if you don't need it.

As the other guys have mentioned, you need some flashes.

i am pretty new to this whole thing, so forgive me if i mumble or babble. but would the 580 give better flash results with the 20D?
seems i have read that the 580 was aimed to work well with the TTL on the 20D. i think it is TTL II but not sure on the 20D.
