I one way of doing it is to make 2 layers of the same photo, b&w over color then "erase" all the color you want to remove showing the b&w under layer.

BUT there must be an easier way................

I have Photoshop. Just go Image>Adjustments>Desaturate and left click. Then click on the history brush and paint your chosen area back in. :D

I have a variation of Gramps' solution which is my preferred method in Photoshop as it is more flexible than simply history brushing or erasing:

Create a duplicate of your colour layer and use your preferred method of coverting the uppermost of the two to B&W. Then add a layer mask to the B&W layer and using black and white brushes paint in the layer mask. 100% Black will completely show the layer beneath (ie. the colour) and 100% white will only show the B&W layer. Obviously by varying the opacities and hardness of your brush you can get a very accurate "merging" of the two layers.

Enjoy!

Can this be done with Photoshop Elements 3? I haven't bought it yet but am thinking about getting it soon.

I use the full version of Photoshop and I have not used Elements myself but a quick search on Google says that layer masks are available in Elements so you should have no trouble producing these kind of images! :)

Thanks for going through the trouble, Nitsch. You just talked me into spending another hundred bucks.
