Flash Question

My Canon SD870IS seems to take better indoor pictures with the flash turned off.

I was at a wedding over the weekend and the pictures with the flash on came out very dark. When I turned the flash off they came out much better.

Can somebody explain this to me?

You were probably too far from your subjects to illuminate them properly. Images usually always look better with flash turned off unless you're using bounce flash. Sometimes the shutter is too slow though and you end up with a blurry picture.
