I took this a few nights ago with my 100-400L w/a Canon 1.4x stacked with a Kenko POS 2x. I took this in the middle of the city and I could see the heat waves (Im guessing its heat) distorting the image in the view finder. Can't wait to try this out in the country. Anyway, thought some people on here might enjoy it...

Spectacular image, rivals shots taken with telescopes. The detail is sweet and the exposure is right on the money.
What you were seeing was atmospheric turbulence. Winds aloft, radiational cooling among other things cause distortion which is usually most evident along the outer rim but yours looks very minimal. Inside the city you're going to get a lot of radiational cooling long into the night. The early morning hours are much more likely to be settled but there are no guarantees since the cooling is only a part of the problem. It's best to try and avoid shooting over rooftops, parking lots, etc.(not easy in the city, I know) since they compound the heat distortion closer to the camera.

Thanks Nighthound! That is great information to know. Yeah I was shooting directly at downtown Dallas, so I am sure that didnt help. I did notice it was quite a bit better later in the night. I tried to take some star images, failed, read online, and decided I need more equipment :)

That really is excellent. So it was a 1.4x and a 2x teleconverter stacked, is that right? Very interesting to see the quality that these can provide...I wonder how many you could stack before the image quality would deteriorate too much. (I must get myself one...my Jessops 2x TC only works with Canon EF lenses, and not my new EF-S lenses! :( )

Thanks!
Adrena1in,
Yeah its a 1.4x stacked on a POS (old and poor quality) Kenko MC4 2x converter. I was actually surprised it turned out as it did. I think with that combo I am already pushing F16 with respect to light coming into the lens, so it would be additional light lost.
