Thought I'd share the latest poster that I just sold. Just as an FYI - I put the player's name on the poster where it currently says "Go Eagles" and I personally am not a fan of the aqua color in the background layer, but the parents wanted a tie-in with the colors in their daughter's room.

Looks like a lot of work went into this. Overall I like it, but I agree that the aqua color serves no purpose... and kind of clashes with their uniforms. I am not sure I like the overlapping of some of the images, particularly the team photo. You might have tried to do a little too much on one poster.
Now a couple of questions. I've never offered these, and am curious how you do with them. How much time does it take you and what do you charge? Do you do this from scratch or have some template you are working from? How big is the final print?

The poster is 12 x 18 and the pricing depends on the number of pictures and cut-outs a customer wants. Pricing is $40, $50 or $60 if they order from a template design -- the one displayed is $60. I will do them from scratch and I do those by quote. I average around 60 orders a year and I'm finding people generally want these more so than individual pictures now.

i feel it's a little busy and my eyes can't concentrate nor is there a flow.
it's kinda weird to have the main picture overlapping the team photo
the use of the net and ball in the corners is pretty cool, but i don't quite get the aqua and orange ball in the middle

looks good but I would move the team picture above the middle image. Also I would add more depth. This is so important for the reasons stated above, it will give the viewer a place to settle their eyes, a foreground - middle- and background. Also try to ground the floating cutout images.

Tom, Nice work as always. I agree with all the above suggestions. The photos are nice and sharp with good colors. That orange/aqua is strange. Keep it up, you have good ideas.

Thanks Kyle - I always value your opinion. Like I said earlier, the mom wanted aqua in it to tie in with her daughter's room colors and it's actually a red going into aqua so that's prob what makes it look orange. Again, not my choice either, but the mom wouldn't have put her autograph on the check with out it!! I attached another one I'm working on without the aqua.

I like this design better. Only thing that sticks out at me on that one is the white balance looks a little off... but could just be my eyes with the smaller image. The volleyballs look kind of yellow though in the two biggest images and the uniforms look a little yellow too. Otherwise, I like the overall design. I need to take a crack at doing some of these.
Any words of wisdom for someone that's not done them before. Any tricks or tips you can pass along. I really like your overall style vs. many that I've seen. I am pretty good with Photoshop, just never tried doing posters.

Thanks Mike I appreciate it. I didn't notice the "yellowing" until you mentioned it -- when I look at the PS file, everything is fine, so it must be something related to the jpeg compression maybe. Well the only words of wisdom I have is to just think of a layout then just take your time and do it. Adam, who posted in this thread earlier, has some truly nice poster templates on his site that are reasonably priced -- you might want to consider buying one of those and just use it as a baseline and let it grow from there. Then when you're done, post it here and undoubtedly you'll get some great improvement suggestions. Good luck!
