Hi, I'm a beginner photographer who's playing around with totally manual exposure... I was wondering is the EV is supposed to be at 0 when its the right exposure? When its at 0 does that mean its the correct exposure any tips appreciated. Thanks

What are you referring to when you say EV. The only EV that I'm familar is the exposure value and that varies depending on the aperture, shutter speed and ISO selected.

When the needle is in the middle, you have a "Standard Exposure" which isn't necessarily the "Correct Exposure". Your camera meter is set to expose for 18% Grey (12% on some cameras). That means it tries to make whatever it meters, look 18% grey. If what your shooting averages out to 18% grey then the standard and correct exposures are the same. If you are shooting snow before the soot and dogs have gotten to it, you need to add 2 stops of exposure to the standard exposure to get the correct one, and make the snow look white. If you are shooting a black tuxedo, you need to reduce the standard exposure by two stops to get it to look black. Here's an example you can do yourself. Take White, Black, and Grey pieces of paper. Take a picture of each separately, using the cameras "standard exposure". Make sure that each fills the camera viewfinder. All three pictures will look the same using the standard exposure - grey. Try the procedure again, but this time using the corrections suggested. See what happens.

EV is for automatic exposure settings. If you are in manual mode, you are in control of the settings and not your camera.

I still don't know what EV means as used in this context.
