I am looking at a vertical battery grip for the 40D and i see the BG-E2 and the BG-E2N. anyone know the difference between these two?

the BG-E2N is the new grip...the only differences are the new one has no rubber texture on the back of the grip, it has improved weather sealing, and I think thats it

wouldn't you want the rubber texturing though?

yeah, I personally like the old ones more...But yes you are right, the rubber texture is nicer than none

May look cheap but both are equally funcional.

wouldn't it be more slippery? I mean those textures are on for a reason...and the N is compatible with EVERY camera the non-N version is, right?

i got my gear a couple of days ago and it isn't a problem at all with out the texture on the back, if it didn't have any texture on the front it would be a different story, i have had my camera for 5 days now and have taken over a thousand shots with it on and don't plan on taking it off.

I use my camera vertically as much as normally and the grip is absolutely fine. Grip or no, I can still hold it with no trouble at all. I think the back grip is just for aesthetic functionality.

When I finally get all the lenses I feel I need (not much longer, now) and a couple more CF cards, maybe I'll get a grip for the cool factor. I do shoot mostly in portrait orientation so I can always use that as an excuse ;-)

My bag is starting to get uncomfortably heavy and with airline carry on limits for many flights, this is becoming an issue....what do I leave behind.

i am going to england and ireland in a couple of weeks, and i got the bg-e2n and it hasn't come off my camera yet(well twice for cleaning purposes). it is an awesome accessory and works great for portrait, i have regular sized hands for a guy 5'10'' and i use it also for just the extra grip size, my pinky would always end up under the camera to add extra grip, but with the grip attached it is much better. i would just get a bigger bag. On my trip i am planning on taking a pelican case with all my gear and either a waist belt or a sling bag. becasue i am probibly going to rent a couple of lenses.
