Thanks to the three of you for your comments. (It's electric-powered, Marie.)
As an experiment in backgrounds, you might take a look at the same image on my website. A lot of people advocate white or light-colored backgrounds, but they can really overwhelm the eye and obscure detail in photographs.
In the picture here, against light yellow, it's difficult to see the vertical black lines near the left and right borders even when you know they're there. Although you're blinded by the yellow right now, if you click over to the image on a dark background -- and expand the window so there's no other light color on-screen -- in a few seconds you'll see the black lines...

Stay there for 15 seconds and they become even more apparent. That's one of the reasons I tend to work on photographs at night with no ambient light in the room.
Just a thought. I'm really not trying to drive traffic to the website -- I have no sponsors paying me big bucks for page hits. :)

Hi don
I left this until now when I had more time to see what you are explaining here to us , and thanks for taking the time
The images look the same to me, both when I looked at the the url and the picture posted here
I see horizontal lines on that lovely wall ok
(it is a nice shot of the detail on the wall too)
but I am not sure where the vertical lines are.
I see black ok , around the edges of the half circles inside the lamp.
the backgrounds on both your pictures look exactly the same but I haven't got the pictures side by side so I could be mistaken
sorry if I am not understanding too well what you mean as I have would liked to
regards
marie

Hi Marie,
Here's the picture worth a thousand (of my) words...
http://www.kleptography.com/dl/bocred.jpg
I find that the light-colored background overwhelms the black verical wall stripes (in red), making them difficult to see. Here's the link with the dark-colored background again for comparison...

thanks very much for the smaller picture don
gosh, I am not sure what I am seeing regarding the lines
I see your two red lines on either side, as you show here
when I look at your web picture, the url one which you give here separately, I see, all around the very edges of the picture , a very light pinkish/red line which is coming from the backgorund you have put in
I see no black lines at all
the background , as far as I can tell, is the very same on both pictures
the trick to compare with a more pale background ?
really sorry for this don
a sticker, which I have on my cooker says 'bare with me'
so do I ,as I am not understanding fully
no worries about how you are explaining
I would imagine that part is ok
If I was much older I could put it down to old age
(me that is)
the coalman just left and so did my dog
the doors all blew open together and dog saw an escape hatch : )))))
Good for her
Hope I get to see (not an escape hatch) but the black lines
(you must have heard that they were wanting to ' put me away' and got you to do some tests on me ?

Hi Marie,
Perhaps I'm making too much of this (but I'm not, of course). The lamp is set in the middle of a rectangular plate of stone. You can see the horizontals but the verticals -- like the ones above and below the lamp from adjacent plates -- are difficult to see when the picture is on a light background.
Now go to my website -- yes, it's an order -- and stare at the picture for 15 seconds and tell me you see the black grouting around the stone plate, including the verticals. :)
I'm going to bed now, so you have all night to do this.
Cheers,
Don

eureka !
yowl !
I found it !
them !
black lines
phew
thanks to your final exhausted explanation saying the obvious don , that the *^"%" &*
I mean, beautiful lamp was in the middle of a plate of stone !
and the grouting !
that word really helped me THINK about where the lines should be
(now I can tell everybody about the backhander which you gave me to keep this subject up and running
so as your web site is stared at by millions of people for 15 seconds,
and probably more if they are all like me ::::)
my online phone company just love me
thanks a lot for the further explanation don
much appreciated
I can rest in peace now
(can you : )

I'm awake now... and pleased at your "eureka." Well done. And with so many hits, I can now convince all sorts of fly-by-night companies to advertise on my website. :)
Cheers,
Don
P.S. Thanks for the bag. I'll take it everywhere.

quote from Hosikim >
Don, your pictures are wonderful...
You don't disappoint me.
unquote
the samurai, yes I guessed it was as you say > made of metal
and I am glad you understood what I meant regards 'touch wood'
you knew straight off after the touch
I just put in the samurai name after the other word just for fun
(am wondering what the samurai sybolizes now )
wait !
a few seconds later >>>>
I have just looked it up and see a samurai is a member of an ancient Japanese warrior caste
what's he doing in hong kong ?
just making sure to keep friendly relations with the neighbours ? maybe he was 'exchanged' .....
'caste' means any of the hereditary classes into which hindu society is divided
so ..have to think about that and why samurai is there
>>>>don's quote
I'll try to remember tonight. We're going to Exchange Square tonight for the
official launch of Keith Macgregor's new photography book, "Neo City Hong
Kong." Keith is an acquaintance who has been active in Hong Kong photography
for decades and still produces the best postcards in town.
' holy season' and realised christmas means different things to people of different backgrounds and culture , so decided I better
stay safe by saying 'shiny' and not offend anyone
but anyway that window you showed was full of shiny things and it is a shiny
season : )))

ps
the little paper bag measures 2"x2and a half inches"
so should easily fit in your pocket in case you get stuck for carrying rings and smaller things like it around : )
pps !
ooops ooops and ooops
Don, I just realised that photography book you mention is about modern hong kong, not 'neon lights' : ))))))))
(well, I suppose it could be some of those included also )
sorry......................................
