Macro??

I am wanting to do some non-professional marco photos. Are the +1, +2, +4, +10 close up kits any good?

Also, I am trying to find just a standard filter to protect my lens. I don't want to alter the photos. What should I buy. Most of them come in a kit, so what do the standard filters do?

I'm looking into the 250D for some macro work. All I have right now is the kit lens though. The 500D is another choice but it's optimized for lenses 70mm upwards IIRC.
