I see the "L" designation used here referencing lenses. What does "L" mean, and what's the benefit of it?

L series lenses by canon are the top flight lenses. Expensive mostly fixed aperture lenses whether they be a wide angle zoom(e.g.17-40 f4) or a super telephoto(e.g.300 2.8. Professional grade as opposed to the consumer class lenses, some with plastic mounts, you may get with your canon kit.

Put one on your camera and you'll know the diff right away.

According to Canon, the "L" stands for luxury.

Starbucks. Really. I've seen it in a couple different colors. White is one of the newer ones.
