Last weekend, I went to an apple orchard to pick apples. Here are some of the photos; as usual, C&Cs are welcome.

#1: a McIntosh: I always thought that the shine was due to wax applied during the packaging. Seeing for myself how easily the apples could be made to shine by simply rubbing them on the back of my sleeve made me change my mind.

#2: They were also selling pumpkins

Please can you explain a bit more??
Are apples seriously coated in wax? Is this for all apples? What do you do with them? How do they taste? You are joking right??
Nice pics by the way....;)

Glad you liked the pics!
Oh, what I meant was that I read somewhere that some apples have (edible?) wax sprayed onto them during packaging so that they arrive to the stores shiny and bright.
So, when I went to the orchard, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that it may not be the case that apples need wax to become shiny - picked up an apple, cleaned it on my sleeve and it became like the apple in picture #1. By the way, this is how it looked like before I cleaned it:

Yeah, most apples at the supermarket are waxed to some extent, that's why they look nice and shiny! Yum!

WOW! Waxed apples!! Thanks for letting me know....
Here in the UK, we don't have waxed apples (hence my question) and it does seem strange that supermarkets over in Canada (or N. America?) would cover something so natural and tasty in wax just to make them look nicer! Oh well.....
Our apples over here tend to look more like the one in the first photo - naturally shiny!

I would not be too sure (about apples not being waxed in the UK). If they have been minimally processed, they should look like picture #5 as they hit the stores. If they are bright and shiny, definitely something has been done - either washed down with some detergent and/or sprayed with wax. Having said that, however, I'd think that the wax should be the 'perfectly safe and edible' kind, just like rBGH (in milk), aspartame, and MSG. :)
